UNFORTUNATE START Mars Running of Chief Offering at Fairmount Park Course Martha Washington Is Caught in inWebbing Webbing at Start Swerving Swervingin in Way of Bombay COLLINSVILLE 111 June 9 An unfor ¬ tunate happening occurred at the start of the St Louis Riding Club Purse fifth and feature attraction at Fairmount Park this afternoon which marred the running of that race completely There were but four starters for the contest staged at a mile and a six ¬ teenth They were brought to the post and lined up at the barrier and the start was affected Sea Rocket and Jack Horgan were off in good style but Martha Washington became badly tangled in the webbing and being unable to break quickly unavoidably swerved right in the way of Bombay the other starter impeding him fully and mak ¬ ing it impossible for the latter to leave in motion also Both of them were hopelessly left standing at the starting point pointJack Jack Horgan and Sea Rocket settled in their stride for the race but were hard re ¬ strained by their respective riders who apparently feared the possibility of a recall The start however was official and there was no reason for the jockeys mounted on the two more fortunate starters dallying in going on with the race in the usual manner Finally they decided to do so and Jack Horgans rider then took the lead when rounding the first turn while Sea Rocket raced in the wake of the latter Bombay and Martha Washington raced many lengths in the rear having nothing left but to fight out the battle for third place placeEASILY EASILY TAKES LEAD LEADRounding Rounding the final turn into the stretch Sea Rocket was released from restraint and easily overhauling Jack Horgan took easy command and came to the finish an easy winner Martha Washington accounted for the third money finally gaining that award from the not severely perservered with Bom ¬ bay baySea Sea Rocket was confidently backed in the feature and his followers rejoiced when the official result was posted Bombay was the next strongest choice in the betting and there was considerable displeasure expressed by his followers who gave vent loudly and in an unsportsmanlike manner to their feelings feelingsIdeal Ideal conditions prevailed for the sport again and the racing was witnessed by what was probably the largest weekday atten ¬ dance which has turned out at the present meeting meetingThe The Audley Farm uncovered a fleet geld ¬ ing in the initial race fashioned for maiden twoyearolds when Watchword carrying the silks of that establishment almost made a runaway of it showing the way to his eleven other opponents by a wide margin from start to finish winning eased up H T Archibalds Sweepanola was easily best for second place talcing that decision also by a large margin at the finish while the Missouri Stables Betty Browning finished third Betty Browning was the recipient of the most support and though she gave a good performance she lacked the speed of the pair that defeated her herFOXMOIIE FOXMOIIE DISAPPOINTING DISAPPOINTINGFozmore Fozmore heavily supported favorite went down to a defeat in the second race a dash of threequarters A great surprise was the outcome when the lightly regarded Pearlies Girlie one of the field horses showed sud ¬ denly improved form and getting to the front inside the last eighth fought it out gamely and managed to last to save the de ¬ cision by a nose in a close finish in which The Cocoon just failed to catch the winner as they flashed past the finish The Cocoon came from far back in the stretch and would have won in another stride Fallen Leaf set the early pace ot the stretch before tiring then when unable to withstand Pearlies Girlie and The Cocoon lasted to take third place placeWhat What further upset calculations in the second was the fact that Pearlies Girlie had previous to the race belonged in the maiden class but finally managed to gradu ¬ ate by virtue of her suddenly improved form formBond Bond Maid was only cantering at the con ¬ clusion of the one mile third race to score easily from Charlesetta the latter taking second place and Beaverwood which fin ¬ ished in third place Bond Maid was the roost confidently backed and her victory proved popular with the followers of short priced ones Charlesetta managed to take the lead from the ultimate winner at one stage of the contest as the field was turn ¬ ing out of the back stretch but her sojourn in the lead was brief as Bond Maid re ¬ sponded to her riders urge at the head of the stretch taking command and racing to an easy victory victoryTwelve Twelve horses are on starter William Snyders schooling list the latest one being Spats which was added after his race yester ¬ day
