Hertz Watch Reigh Count Gallop One Mile. ♦ Colt Impresses Spectators with His Easy Action and Apparent Readiness to Race at Once. • LOUISVILLE, Ky.. April 13 —Mrs. J. D. Hertz splendid colt Reigh Count gave his legion of admirers further justification for their confidence in him when, at Churchill Downs this morning, he galloped one mile for the first time since his Derby training began, and negotiated the distance in 1 :44. Although not the fastest Derby trial of the season at one mile, it was easily the most impressive, and the time made was excellent for this stage of the Derby training period. Reigh Count was accompanied by Reigh Olga, but their riders were reversed. Chick Lang, who will ride Reigh Count in the Derby, was astride the colt this morning, while Larry Mills, who has been galloping the Derby favorite in all of his workouts, had the leg up on Reigh Olga. Otto Lehmans Derby candidate, which is being trained in the same stable as Reigh Count. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hertz, owners of Reigh Count, were on hand to see the colts latest workout, it being their first visit to Churchill Downs this spring. They were accompanied by Harvey Woodruff, special writer for the Chicago Tribune. The party arrived from Chicago early this morning and vill remain over until tomorrow night. It was rather late in the morning when the two Derby colts were brought out and few other horses were on the track. A large crowd of horsemen watched the work from the infield, while the Hertz party saw the trial from the judges stand. The track, which was still cuppy and dusty, was not suited for fast moves. Reigh Count and Reigh Olga began from the stand, with the latter having an advantage of about five lengths over the Derby favorite at the start. The latter, however, moved up on his pacemaker rounding the turn into the back stretch and was rated that distance behind until they swung into the home stretch, wh?re Reigh Count moved up and was only a neck back of his rival as they raced past the mile post. The pair was then eased up and galloped out an extra quarter mile, completing the Derby distance in 2:17. It was one of the best workouts ever shown by a Derby eligible, over the local course, in years. Its chief merit lay in the eveness of the pace, and one of the work watchers afterwards remarked that Lang could not have rated Reigh Count better had he been equipped with a clock. The colts were timed separately. Reigh Counts fractions were :26, :32, 1:18. 1:44. It will be seen that he negotiated each quarter in exactly the same time, twenty-six seconds. Reigh Olga was timed one mile in 1 :45, his fractions being :26%, :52%, 1 :19. His showing also was meritorious, but could not compare with that of his more noted stablemate. Both colts pulled up in grand shape and showed no distress. Earlier in the morning Anita Peabody was brought out and worked a half-mile in :50"s. in the company of The Answer and Sea Rip. The latter two went on and worked three-quarters in 1:19%. The Hertz party viewed this workout from the center of the field. Next in interest to the workout of the Hertz horses was the fine gallop of George Barnes" Derby eligible Whiskarm, which ran three-quarters in 1 :17%, the best time for the distance made by any Derby colt during the morning. Whiskarm ran under restraint, going the first quarter in :24Vs, half in :50%, three-quarters in 1 :17% and was eased up at the one mile post in 1 :41». Nick Cullop turned in a good work when he ran one mile easily in 1 :48, going the half in :51% and the three-quarters in 1 :19%. Golden Racket and Cartago went out together and, hard held, galloped five-eighths in 1 :02%. Colonel Shaw ran five-eighths in 1 :09 under restraint, and L»octor Fred ran a similar distance in the good time of 1 :03*£. Irish Pal had plenty of speed when he galloped three-quarters in 1 :19% and completed seven-eighths in 1 :33%. Mulligans Son ran three- quarters in 1:21 *i and cantered the mile in 1 :52%. The fastest three-quarters of the morning was witnessed when S. Peabodys Clark Handicap candidate Flat Iron, accompanied by Minox, ran the distance in 1 :13%. Rolled Stocking, another candidate for the Clark Handicap, showed his fitness by going an easy mile in 1 :46%. Sandal Phan. Mrs. Hertz candidate for the I "butante Stakes, showed good speed when, accompanied by Protection and St. Lucia, she negotiated a quarter mile in :24. Roy Carruthers. manager of the Book Cadillac Hotel and the Fhoenix Hotel in Lex-r ington, is another member of the associations directorate.
