GREAT MUD WORK Clyde Van Dusen Gallops Mile in 145 in Soft Going GoingDemonstrates Demonstrates Liking for Churchill Downs Track TrackWhen When He Negotiates Trying Course in inFine Fine Time Ervast Works Well LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 Clyde Van Dusen the courageous little Man o War gelding which gave Blue Larkspur the Kentucky Derhy choice such a tough tussle in their only race of the year at the Lexington track ten days ago further tightened his hold on a place among the most highly regarded for the coming renewal of the Derby when he went a mile handily in 145 over the toughest pos ¬ sible track at Churchill Downs here this morning It was a standout move a workout reflecting exceptional ability and quite convincing in the way of stamp ¬ ing the rugged gelding as being exceedingly fond of the Downs track The footing was not unlike that of a quagmire the severe rains of yesterday having so thor oughly drenched the course that it was ieep in mm1 and perhaps the most testing of the spring training season here hereTrainer Trainer Clyde Van Dusen had the hope ¬ ful of Herbert P Gardner New York sports ¬ man under saddle at 5 a m and Torch Boy his training companion for the past several weeks again accompanied him to the track After galloping a mile the two were taken to the front stretch and went into their work from the stand or mile starting point Torch Boy as has been the custom for some time broke fully fifteen lengths in front of his star barnmate The former was indulged to the fullest while Clyde Van Dusen stepped along easily and with strong graceful strides as he opened what many horsemen regarded as one of his finest trials Under the guid ¬ ance of C McCrosson he traversed the open ¬ ing quarter in 25 but failed at reducing Torch Boys advantage Taking only a like amount of time to run the next quarter Clyde Van Dusan cut deeply into his pacemakers lead and completing threequarters in 1 17 jput him on even terms with Torch Boy as they turned into the main stretch During the run through the quarter mile of stretch Clyde Van Dusen continued with fine speed running the quarter in 21 thus round ¬ ing out the mile in 1 45 and permitting him to draw away from Torch Boy BoyTRAILER TRAILER HIGHLY PLEASED PLEASEDClyde Clyde Van Dusen finished out nicely in hand and came out of the effort in amazingly fine condition He was not distressed by the work and cooled out fine Trainer Van Dusen expressed himself as being more than pleased with the manner in which the gelding has been taking his training and is satisfied that his trial ths morning was far more remark ¬ able than the fgures of time indicate indicateVan Van Dusen was an early departure from the track as he expected to motor to Lex ¬ ington to inspect the horses he has at the Kentucky Association course courseAnother Another Derby eligible and likely starter for the race to work well over the bad track was H P Head leys Paraphrase This son of Supremus went a mile in 148 easily He was timed in 25 for the quarter 52 for the halfmile and in 1 18 for three quarters Trainer Walter Taylor has this threeyearold in fine condition Amsterdam from the same stable breezed a mile in 150 150Charles Charles N Lewis Bonoby was worked over the full Derby course of one mile and quar ¬ ter in 2 19 He went well in hand and in the following fractional time 25 52 121 and 1 50 50ERVAST ERVAST GALLOPS TWO MILES MILESBoris Boris which the Harned Brothers may start in the Derby was opened up three eighths in 4lVs and probably will be given a more extended trial tomorrow tomorrowVoltear Voltear the Derby starter of the Dixiana Stable of Charles T Fisher and Admiral Gary T Grayson which arrived yesterday from Maryland in charge of Dick Handley one of trainer Preston Burchs assistants is expected to resume training tomorrow morn ¬ ing The gelding stood the trip westward in good style styleTrainer Trainer Walter Fenwick had Baron Longs Ervast on the track for the first time since he unloaded Sunday morning from Tijuana and the son of Paicines was galloped two miles He is rapidly recovering from the tiring effects of his fourday trip and Fen wick is satisfied with him in every respect Owner Long who now is at Chicago is ex ¬ pected here next week
