ANDROMEBATRIilPHS Tijuana Campaigner Wins Fea ¬ ture at Exposition Park Conquistador Delays Start of St StCharles Charles Handicap Jockey Lyon LyonSuspended Suspended for Rough Riding AURORA 111 May 7 The Davisonowned filly Andromeda one of the star threeyear olds of the recent Tijuana winter meeting made an auspicious debut at Aurora in ac ¬ counting for the St Charles Handicap the main attraction at Exposition Park this after i noon Andromeda raced coupled with her stablemate Fortunate Girl G Collins Shas ¬ ta Lad favorite finished second C B Irwins Short Price was third The fractious Conquistador kept the field at the barrier for a considerable period and when the start was effected he was away poorly but displaying fine speed moved into the lead and stayed there until near the stretch where he tired and faded from the picture Andromeda had been his closest attendant in the earlier stages and wren he tired she took up the pacemaking and held Shasta Lad safe in the stretch stretchShasta Shasta Lad and Queen Towton were suf ¬ ferers soon after the start as a result of the rough riding tactics of jockey C Lyon astride Anita M The latter was ridden from an outer position at the start to the inner rail and impeded Shasta Lad and Queen Tow ton the latter being virtually eliminated from contention as a result of the interference The stewards promptly suspended Lyon for his rough tactics Shasta Lad was probably best in the race for he closed an immense gap in the last quarter quarterWEATHER WEATHER I3IPROVES I3IPROVESImprovment Improvment in weather was a factor in bringing out another large crowd The rac ¬ ing was interesting with fast time considering the class of starters Betting activities were again of a voluminous total Favorites suf ¬ fered defeats in most races racesThe The fouryearold Honeyfish making his first appearance of the meeting in the in ¬ augural race of the afternoon carried the silks of J Hannie to an easily accomplished victory Honeyfish carried the confidence of the players and was the first heavily backed favorite of the meeting to make good Gianelloni rode the winner confidently and permitted his mount to settle into his best stride before undertaking to overtake the early leader Gianelloni called on the son of Honeywood near the stretch turn where Honeyfish responded gamely moving past Brunswick into a good lead never to be headed thereafter Brunswick held on well through the final threesixteenths easily out finishing the remainder Gareth which held third place safe from the start was never in danger from the others and incidentally had almost as much backing as the winner winnerW W M Cains Fortunate Mann one of the choices for the second race engaged in a thrilling finish with Sun Dance and Super frank and under a hustling ride just man ¬ aged to get up to win by half a length in the final few yards of the stretch drive Sun Dance closest in the wake of the nner looked the winner midway in the stretch but beginning to tire in the last fifty yards Sun Dance was unable to withstand the final challenge of the Cain colorbearer Super frank finished fast and succeeded in nosing out Frank McMahon for third place Knock ¬ about and Sun Dance set the early pace Knockabout racing in advance of the others to the stretch turn where he then was done tiring fast in the final drive driveMAIDEX MAIDEX RACE RACETen Ten maiden threeyearolds furnished the contest in the third race over five and a half furlongs E E Mooars Japhern daughter of Donnacona Miss O E graduated into the winning class when she scored a deci ¬ sive victory leading home her nearest rival by a four length margin eased up Faux Pas one of the choices landed in second place inches in advance of Flood Contro which finished third Japhern slow to start had to close a big gap on the leaders while racing to the far turn but challenging the leaders at that stage quickly took command from Windy the early leader and then assuming a long ISad never left the result in doubt Faux Pas gamely outstayed the tiring Flood Control by a nose Japhern car ¬ ried the most support and scored another vic ¬ tory for the followers of the favorites favoritesThe The mile and a sixteenth found Isoard fa ¬ vored one and he made good but it was a lucky victory for him as Shasta Belle which finished second should have reversed the de ¬ cision with him but for being sharply cut off at a critical period in the stretch racing by Jennifer The latter had been the leader during the first threequarters and gave way to Isoard when the latter challenged Shasta Belle was coming fast next to the inner rail when Jennifer suddenly came over and blocked her She was next to the outside of the leading pair but failed to catch Isoard by a neck Sandy Lady got up in time to dispose of Jennifer in the final strides for third place
