KILDARE SURPRISE WINNER Outsider Accounts for Valuable Queens County Handicap Winner Kal Feng Balko and Sortie Finish Inches Apart Aqueduct Sleet ¬ ing Opens NEW YORK N Y June 11 Kildare from the Newtondale Stable and well ridden by the apprentice Passero was the winner of the Queens County Handicap this afternoon It was the opening day feature of the Aque ¬ duct meeting and furnished a rare thrill when Kai Feng from the Rancocas Stable the Sagamore Stables Balko and A C Schwartz Sortie followed so closely lapped that the actual result was in doubt until the numbers were displayed displayedThere There was a big crowd out for the opening of the new meeting and while the weather was a bit chilly for this season of the year it was pleasant The old course had been brightened up for the occasion and there were some appreciated changes for the com ¬ fort and convenience of the patrons patronsThere There was considerable delay at the post in the Queens County Handicap and Kildare the winner and light weight of the party was largely responsible by reason of his un ¬ ruly action But the start was good and Balko the topweight lost little time in rac ¬ ing into the lead High Strung carried him along at a fast pace and Kildare raced after them with Distraction Kai Feng Comstock ery and Sortie following in the order named namedBalko Balko held resolutely to his lead and turn ¬ ing into the stretch he lost some ground but in the meantime he had raced High Strung into defeat though Kildare continued to race close after him On the stretch turn Fator had saved ground with Kai Feng while Sortie always slow to begin was mak ¬ ing up some ground groundAll All through the final furlong Balko was tiring and bearing out but he fought along gamely as the others gained In a desperate drive Kildare dropped his head down in front and while it seemed from the stand that Bal ¬ ko had saved second place his bearing out had lost the decision by a nose to Kai Feng Sortie finishing outside of them all was a head back backThe The feature had a net value to the winner of 7350 and Kildare was so little thought of that his impost was ninetyfive pounds against the 123 pounds carried by Balko BalkoThe The sport began with a six and a half fur ¬ longs handicap and it saw John P Whites Everytime rather an easy winner over Mrs Graham Fair Vanderbilts Byrd with W R Coes Hilaria saving third from Marshall Fields Perkins Hilaria beat the barrier at the break and she was lengths clear before the others of the company were under way Schenk made every use of that advantage and he rushed the filly along with Grey Watch going after her and Byrd following the Rancocas Stable filly Everytime had Continued on twentyfirst page
