BEELZEBUB STAKES WINNER » Bradley Jumper Triumphs in Green Spring Valley Steeplechase. ♦ Defeats Cawvoge By a Head After Apparently Being Beaten — Election Day Accounts for Opener. ♦ BALTIMORE, Md., April 30.— The Maryland Jockey Club offered as an attraction at Pimlico this afternoon, one of its old fixtures, the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase. Todays running was the twenty-fifth of this famous old cross-country race. Some of the best steeplechasers in America were winners of this stake in previous years but in no year did it furnish a more spectacular contest than the one run this afternoon. Fifteen started, and Edward R. Bradley furnished the winner in Beelzebub, which came again after appearing to be a beaten horse at the last jump. In a furious drive, to which he responded with rare courage, Beelzebub got up in the final strides to beat Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Cawvoge by a head. Three lengths back of this pair came Mrs. T. W. Durants Sydney, and Crumpler, one of Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks entry. Beelzebub and Cawvoge, both trained by J. W. Healy, ran as an entry and were favorites. The running of the stake brought out the hunt club set, and the gathering in the club house section was the largest of the meeting. Starter Milton got them away to a splendid start, with Beelzebub in front. He was soon joined by Cawvoge, and the pair, racing head and head, drew away from the others. Beelzebub and Cawvoge raced like ; team to the tenth jump, where Sydney moved up with a challenge and at the twelfth jump was within a length of Beelzebub. Cawvoge was third, another length back. He stumbled in landing and the ground he lost cost him the race. Thorndike was driving and Beelzebub, mak ing a last pesperate effort, got up to beat Cawvoge by a head. Sydney was a tiring third, beaten three lengths for second r iace Sir John L. ran out of the course at the eleventh jump. Blanton fell at the tenth obstacle and Luckite at the ninth. The net value of the stake was ,460. A rousing finish came with the running of the first race when Election Day came from behind in the stretch run to close with a rush and was up right at the end to beat Galavantier by a scant half length. Misty and Dark Vision drew away from their opponents the first furlong and, racing nead and head, opened up a lead of three lengths. Coming into the home stretch Misty drew away from Dark Vision, but going to the furlong pole she tired and Galavantier caught and passed her. The latter looked a certain winner a sixteenth from home, but he too tired when the final test came and Election Day, with a rush on the outside, was up in the last few strides and won going away by half a length. When Misty tired she swerved across in front of Dark Vision and Workman was forced to pull up A poor start that robbed the second race of much of its interest resulted as several of the lot repeatedly broke through the I barrier. When the start finally came, it found The Nile and Flaming Mamie away flying, and the favorite, Louis O., left at the post. The field was pretty well strung out. The advantage that The Nile and Flaming Mamie gained at the start proved too big a handicap for the others to overcome. The Nile led Flaming Mamie by a slight margin until after passing the furlong post, where Flaming Mamie took command, to draw away at the end. At the finish she had a lead of three lengths over The Nile, which beat General Lejeune by two lengths for second place. Coltiletti drove General Lejeune desperately in the early stages in an effort to get to the leaders, but his mount was never able to close the gap.
