KENTUCKY DERBY HOME ♦ Churchill Downs Ready for Opening of Spring Meeting Saturday. ♦ Crack Field Assured for Clark Handicap, 0,000 Added Inaugural Attraction. 1 LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— Churchill Downs, home of the world famous Kentucky Derby, to be renewed on Saturday, May 16, is in complete readiness for the opening on Saturday, of the spring and Derby meeting of nineteen days. Preparations carried out under the personal direction of Col. M. J. Winn reached a stage Of virtual completion several days ago, and fuller organization of the racing department Friday morning will leave no detail unfinished. The picturesque and popular old course was further improved and completely renovated during recent weeks, and patrons will find it possessed of all its attractiveness and appeal when the gates swing open .Saturday afternoon. In addition to the Kentucky Derby, the meeting brings renewals of five other valuable features, and the first of the six will be offered in 0,000 added Clark Handicap, feature of the inaugural program. A week later the 0,000 Added Kentucky Oaks will be renewed, while the ,000 Added Debutante Stakes will be run on Friday, May 15, the day before the 0,000 Added Kentucky Dei by. The Bashford Manor Stakes, also of ,000 added, will be revived on Wednesday, May 20. and the 0,000 Grainger Memorial Handicap is reserved for Saturday, May 23, the closing day of the meeting. STARS OF TURF ELIGIBLE. Saturdays renewal of the Clark Handicap over one mile and one-sixteenth, should prove a great race under any condition. Probable starters from among the best of the handicap horses in the West include: Lady Broadcast, Brown Wisdom, My Dandy, Bargello, Michigan Boy, Tannery, Roy, Sil-verdale, Prince D Amour, Dark Entry, Jimmy Moran, Manta and others. Mrs. Payne Whitney furnished the winner of last years race in Stars and Bars, and other victors include such as Martie Flynn, Jock, Helens Babe, Chilhowee. San-Utar, Spic and Span, Audacious, Exterminator, Boniface. Midway, Old Rosebud, Hodge, and others among the best of their time, going back to Voltigeur, winner of the first running of the fixture, back in 1875. The racing departments will function Friday under the direction of Charles C. Price, presiding steward, and Wm. H. Shelley, racing secretary. Meeting with C. Bruco Head, T. C. Bradley and Elijah Hogg, associate stewards, tomorrow morning, Judande Price will go over plans for the supervision of the racing during the meeting and a number of applications for licenses will be presented for their consideration. ARRIVALS FROM LEXINGTON. Although hundreds of horses have been at the Downs and Douglas Park for w« eks, scores more arrived today from Lexington, and many others are scheduled to arrive from the same point tomorrow. The unloading of horses and training of those on the grounds made for no lack of activity about the track and stables today. A number I of outstanding horses were sent through brisk preparatory trials over the fast track that prevailed. The racing strip, partially resoiled during the winter, is in fine condition, and horsemen look for it to prove somewhat faster ■ than the more cuppy course of the past few years. Schooling from the Bahr gates to be used In starting all races during the meeting, en-1 gaged more than on any day since the machines were assembled a week ago. Starter William Hamilton, who motored from Lexington last night, was in charge of the schooling. , Cecil Howard arrived at Douglas Park Kith the three-year-old Half Day acquired i Maryland a few days ago.
