PLATERS DAY PROGRAM Gables Claiming Purse Heads Card at Tropical Park. Prepare Repeats and Carries Van Schoicks Colors to Another Victory Please Wins Opener. MIAML Fla., Jan. 11. With a program confined to the platers, the Monday sport at Tropical Park naturally did not attract the best horses, but fields for the most part were well matched and good sport resulted. There was a surprisingly large crowd out, and many new arrivals made their appearance on the scene. Four of the races were over the sprinting distances and the three others were each run over the mile route. The Gables Claiming Purse, one of the mile events, had the place of honor, and it resulted in a victory for C. Van Schoicks Prepare, sent to the post by Steve Judge. The son of Supremus was simply repeating his prsvious victory and, after closely following the pace, came away in the stretch to beat Asa Harneds Fair Billows, with Mrs. Grace Dennys Spanfair saving third from Mae Sweep. The start was a good one, but as the twelve raced to the first turn there were several that were carried exceedingly wide, while Mae Sweep and Prepare both saved ground on the inside and, accordingly, had considerable advantage. In the back stretch Mae Sweep set out to show the way, and Clelland had Prepare under slight restraint back of her, and apparently was able to go to the front at the first asking. Fair Billows was galloping strongly in third place, and then came Silk Gown and Spanfair. Clelland made no move with Prepare until near the stretch turn. There he shook up the colt and quickly went to the pacemaker. At the same time Montgomery called on Fair Billows and he moved into second place, while Spanfair was also moving up resolutely under an energetic ride by Mills. MOVE TIMED NICELY. Prepares run had been timed nicely, and at the finish he was a length and a half to the gdod, while Fair Billows had beaten Spanfair by a like distance. Mae Sweep, tiring so badly in the final sixteenth, dropped back to fourth place. One of the best fields of the day went to the post in the six furlong fourth race. Frank Bray sent the winner to the post in O., F. Woodwards Chatover and it was J. Eabys first mount of the Florida season. The battle for the place was a close one, the decision going to O. A. Simmons Tantalizing, with J. C. Treats Hazel Gumberts and J. C. Fletchers Patrick Callahan following in close order as named. From a good start Patrick Callahan went out to show the way, but he was soon closely attended by Chatover and the pair drew out a length and a half from the field, which followed in close order, and Hazel Gumberts was last of the company. Shasta Lover and Tantalizing both raced forwardly, but they were well back of the leading pair. Before the stretch was reached Patrick Callahan showed signs of weakening and Chatover went to the front, but through the stretch Eaby had to send him right aldng to win by a. length. Patrick Callahan weakened badly near the end and Tantalizing and Hazel Gumberts, which had closed a big gap, beat him over the line, the three finishing heads apart. BAD ACTOR WINS. The third offering attracted a field of an even dozen. This went to James Arthurs Bokie B., which acted so badly she was placed outside the stalls. C. E. Hamiltons Elizabeth Fox was second and Sam Louis Delude saved third from Mrs. B. E. Chapmans Single Kay. "Bokie B. left the post fast and C. Phillips at once sent her into a good lead. Once out there, she saved ground all the way and, while the filly was tiring at the end, Phillips kept her going long enough to save the day by a neck. Elizabeth Fox closed resolutely and was wearing the winner down and Delude was another six lengths back. Single Kay was shuffled back in the early racing and closed an immense gap to finish fourth after having been forced to race around on the outside all the way. With better fortune in the early stages he -might have been the winner. Bokie B. was the -surprise of the day. J. W. Mays Please, after two failures at the present meeting, came through with a victory in the opening dash, at five and a Continued on twenty-third page. Col-fords Dunnellen raced to second place, with the cowardly Mortime, from the Mahopac Stable, just saving third from Miss L. Halls Orkin. As was to be expected, Mortime rushed out to make the pace and Mills nursed him along as he cut out the running lengths to the good. Barn Dance and Please were closely lapped back of him and just showing the way to Dunnellen, which was being raced well out from the rail. Mills kept Mortime going with such success that he still had a clear lead of three lengths as he swung into the stretch, but in that final sixteenth he quit badly and Please was on by to be the winner by a length. In fact, Mortime quit so badly that Dunnellen beat him a head for second place, while in a few more strides he would also have been beaten for third.
