EARL SANDE f if r L I t R. WORKMAN Wl EUGENE JAMES 4*1 W As W. KNAPP | DERBY RIDERS, PAST AND PRESENT | The quartet of riders whose pictures are shown above, will figure, or figured, in Derby history past and present. Earl Sande shares the honor with the great colored jockey of other years, Isaac Murphy, of having ridden three winners of the great race. R. Workman, more familiarly known as "Sonny," contract rider for the C. V. Whitney stable, has never had a mount in the Derby, but will ride the favorite, Ladysman, in this years renewal. Eugene James piloted E. R. Bradleys Burgoo King to victory last year, and then scored with him in the Preakness Stakes. Only two other horses besides Burgoo King have won both the Derby and Preakness, Gallant Fox and Sir Barton. Willie Knapp was on the slim back of the great Exterminator, when he carried Willis Sharpe Kilmers silks in 1918.
