The gray colt Enlistar, a son of En- j ♦ quirer, ran a wonderful race in the j J first Kentucky Derby, though the ! | racing guides tell no story of his bril- j [ liant performance. He was one of J | those started in the rear division and, J J after meeting with much hard luck in ! I the race, finished lapped on the three t j placed horses. Later racing proved j j that the best horse had won, but J | those who watched the race close j j that afternoon were fully satisfied j j that, with an even break, Enlister j J would have beaten Aristides in the ! I big race that day. I j The gray colt was ridden in the j j Derby by Cyrus Holloway, who after- j J wards became famous in California | I as a trainer and jockey for E. J. 2 j Baldwin. Enlister was one of the hard j | luck horses of the turf. Later on in I his career he all but beat Ten Broeck j a wonderfully run race and, had he j iin possessed the size of a really well j developed horse, he would doubtless !
