HERNANDEZ SILKS PROMINENT Altmark Romps to Easy Victory in Fairmount Headliner Jockey J Hernandez Astride Fathers Horse Heat Wave Broken by Showers of ofMonday Monday COLLINSVILLE 111 June 5 Lacking a feature for the second straight day the fifth race or the Jim Browning Claiming Purse was the best race offered by racing secre ¬ tary Leigh as eight of the higher priced claiming horses on the grounds started in a sprint over five and a half furlongs The winner was furnished by B Hernandez when Altmark was successful in earning a nose verdict from H Dots Fayette Prince with S J Molays Otterrop third four lengths in the rear rearIn In winning his sixth purse of the year the son of High Cloud had to come from far back to take the winners share of the purse Morheart had the most early speed and going down the back stretch was in front enjoying a twolengths lead with Song Hit and Fayette Prince racing heads apart Altmark was in fourth place racing outside of Otterrop OtterropEntering Entering the stretch Morheart continued to hold a good lead and when Song Hit tired Fayette Prince moved into second place The winner was going easily and making up ground gradually bujt still hold ¬ ing fourth place while racing wide In the strettch Morheart began to shorten her stride and Fayette Prince looked like the winner after passing the eighth post but J Hernandez who had the mount on his fathers horse came to the middle of the track and passed the tiring Song Hit then caught Morheart a sixteenth from the finish and set sail for Fayette Prince PrinceThe The Hernandez horse matched strides with Fayette Prince in the last thirty yards and after passing the H Oots representative tired as Fayette Prince came again Otterrop made up ground entering the stretch but tired badly in the final seventy yards yardsWith With the light showers of yesterday break ¬ ing the terrific heat wave which held forth in this vicinity for nearly a week the at ¬ tendance picked up and the largest week ¬ day crowd of the meeting took in the sport today todayThe The opener at six furlongs for threeyear olds and older in which ten met resulted in PI D Jones River Lee earning his first purse in nearly two years Bag o Roses the choice was a length behind the winner while Sis Largo saved third The winner per ¬ fectly ridden by Tracy Reno took a length lead in the first quarter and allowed Tat to go to the front entering the stretch Reno was saving his mount for the stretch run and after reaching the eighth post he con ¬ tinued on the rail which position he held from the start and after shaking up the winner a sixteenth from the finish came away from his rivals Bag o Roses was slow to get going and was making up ground gradually slipping between Tat and River Lee in the stretch drive driveGiven Given a welljudged ride H H Chopins Gertrude V scored her second straight vic ¬ tory at the meeting in the second race when she earned an easy victory over Runy Bean Roselake and seven others over five and onehalf furlongs furlongsL L Wilson who had the mount on the winner allowed Runy Bean and Belle De ¬ light to set the early pace having a good hold on the daughter of Spic and Span for four furlongs Coming into the stretch Wil ¬ son took his mount through a narrow open ¬ ing between Runy Bean and Belle Delight and drew away after reaching the final sixteenth Runy Bean was tiring fast and just lasted to save second place by a head from the fast moving Roselake RoselakeWar War Dimes which races for Miss Mary Evans left the maiden ranks when he was able to outlast McLeay in a driving finish in the third race Blake was third thirdJockey Jockey J Dyer had the mount on the four yearold son of Jim Gaffney and raced Lovely Amelia into defeat after going a quarter repulsed repeated chalfehges made by Blake for more than a half mile and had to be hard ridden in the final fifty yards to stall off McLeay McLeayShowing Showing improved form over his only other start made here Our Sandy man ¬ aged to get up in time to outfinish Abe Furst Sporting Maudie and four others in the fourth race decided over the mile dis ¬ tance Abe Furst the public choice and Sporting Maudie raced together for three quarters of the way with the winner in third place Reaching the far turn Court ¬ ney called on the son of Gnome and he responded gamely coming to the outside of the leaders when straightened out and got up to beat the favorite by a neck Sporting Maudie tired near the end but was an easy third Wild Transit one of the wellplayed ones was not able to get to the leaders
