NUMEROUS DERBY MCIAIS Chartered Trains From All Points Arriving at Louisville Railroads Borrow Special Equipment From FromWestern Western Roads Chicago Contingent ContingentAmong Among the Largest LOUISVILLE Ky May 3 On the eve of the big race preparations completed for the feeding housing and transportation of the thousands who make this city their Mecca every year at this time Louisville is Derby conscious exuding the carnival spirit from every pore This hospitable southern city is playing host to probably the largest delegation of Derby guests in its history historyRestaurants Restaurants have completed arrangements for crtra supplies hired extra help and increased their seating facilities and the hotel managements were abustle as Derby visitors taxed to capacity their accommoda ¬ tions tionsPleas Pleas for rooms apartments beds or just flop room had the Derby Association hous ¬ ing bureau working overtime and it was estimated that nearly 20000 persons have been placed in private homes homesMeanwhile Meanwhile railroads running into or in the direction of Louisville were busy calling in equipment to make up additional spe ¬ cial trains arranging connections with other lines working out schedules for private cars and making plans for parking space in Louisville yards Governor Ruby Laffoon of Kentucky an enthusiastic racing devotee has declared Derby Day a state holiday and all county offices prepared to close and many business houses were preparing also to close for the afternoon at least The heart of Louis ¬ villes business section is as free of persons as a desert on Derby afternoon afternoonRequirements Requirements tor last minute rail trans ¬ portation bade fair to tax the resources of many lines Many of the specials require special equipment and one road went as far west as the Santa Fe for baggage and club car equipment equipmentTen Ten special trains are being operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad and its eight car Chicago special arrived this morning A short time later a twelvecar Derby all expense special hove into the city and still later an overflow section from the same city Three more train loads one a special of fourteen cars were due Saturday morn ¬ ing ingThe The Pennsylvania also has specials from Pittsburgh and New York each of them coming in two or three sections Numerous per diem private cars have been placed at the disposal of Chicagoans and all of them have been pressed into service servicePart Part of the Illinois Centrals scheduled is a fourteencar Elks special from Memphis in which 150 passengers will be borne to Louisville Another special of the same road will bring another delegation of 110 mem ¬ bers of the Rex Club and the National Burial Association AssociationThe The Baltimore Ohio this morning brought in a tencar load of automobile ex ¬ ecutives from Detroit eleven cars of manu ¬ facturers from Columbus a tencar St Louis special two tencar specials from Cin ¬ cinnati with more due and an extra sched ¬ ule load from Washington WashingtonThe The Big Four brought in a 100passenger Chicago special a 200passenger Cleveland Cincinnati special and train loads from Chattanooga and Atlanta Twenty special parties had arrived over the lines of the L N with more due dueBut But the railroads werent the only means of transportation for Derby visitors They came by plane motor and wateri All the packet lines plying the Ohio reported brisk business and limited facilities Virtually all of the steamers which moor here will offer their sleeping accommodations to Derby guests
