FEW FILLIES IN THE DERBY Only Eleven Have Started Since Re ¬ grets Victory in 1915 All hut Two Unplaced Nine fillies have started in the Kentucky Derby since Regret the only filly that ever was victorious in the event won in 1915 Two of the eight finished third the others were unplaced unplacedAfter After Regrets victory the first filly to start was Viva America in 1918 the Ex ¬ terminator year She and Exterminator t were the two longest shots in the race and at the finish the two were separated by Escoba Exterminator winning and Viva America finishing third The show mutuel payoff was 1320 For five years in succession 1918 to 1922 there were fillies in the Derby In 1921 two started Prudery and Careful and Prudery was the last of her sex to finish in the money She was third to E R Bradleys pair Behave Yourself and Black Servant ServantAfter After 1922 there was a lapse of six years before another filly sought to win the most coveted of all prizes offered threeyearolds After Startles failure to finish in the money in the Morvich Derby there was not another of her sex to go until 1929 when Ben Machree started and finished far back among the alsorans In 1930 Alcibiades started startedIt It is interesting to note that the last filly in the Derby money carried the colors of the Whitney stable Prudery was by Peter Pan Polly Flinders She and Tryster were the stable entry which was favorite in the race The two running for Colonel Brad ¬ ley Behave Yourself and Black Servant fin ¬ ished onetwo heads apart and Prudery and Tryster finished third and fourth respective ¬ ly No filly since Prudery was seriously con ¬ sidered as a Derby candidate until Top Flight came along alongA A summary of the starting of fillies in the Derby since Regrets year follows 1916 and 1917 No starters 1918 Viva America by McGee Pink Rose owned by C T Worthington Finished third to Exterminator and Escoba Carried 113 pounds 1919 Regalo by Sweep Lady Strath more owned by Gallagher Brothers Carried 117 pounds and finished ninth Sir Barton was the winner of this Derby 1920 Cleopatra by Corcyra Gallice owned by W R Coe Ran coupled with David Harum and finished fifteenth in a field of seventeen This was the first year in which the Derby weight was 126 pounds for colts and geldings and 121 pounds for fillies Paul Jones was the winner 1921 Prudery by Peter Pan Polly Flin ¬ ders owned by H P Whitney Was cou ¬ pled with Tryster and finished third to Be ¬ have Yourself and Black Servant Careful by Wrack Mindfull owned by W J Sal ¬ mon Finished fifth 1922 Startle by Star Hawk Inspiration owned by H H Hewitt Finished eighth Morvich was the winner 1923 to 1928 inclusive No filly starters 1929 Ben Machree by Playfellow Sweet Brier owned by C C Hieatt Finished eighteenth Clyde Van Dusen was the win ¬ ner 1930 Alcibiades by Supremus Regal Roman owned by H P Headley Finished tenth Gallant Fox won 1931 No filly starters 1932 Filly eligibles Oscillation by Blon din Tea Time owned by Longridge Stable Finished thirteenth Burgoo King won 1933 No filly starters 1934 Mata Hari and Bazaar started Mata Hari finished fourth
