GREAT DERBY WINNERS List of the Best Horses Which Won Americas Noted Race Cavalcades Name on Honor Roll of Outstanding Thoroughbreds Suc ¬ cessful in Blue Grass Classic When Cavalcade carried off the Kentucky Derby of 1934 the name of another great horse was added to the roster of winners of the now worlds famous Blue Grass clas sic Cavalcade was the outstanding horse of 1934 the largest money winner and the champion threeyearold He was beaten only once by his stablemate High Quest in the Preakness and besides the Kentucky Derby was victorious in the American and Detroit Derbys the Arlington Park Classic and the Chesapeake Stakes His total win ¬ nings for the year amounted to 111325 a sum that he might have greatly enlarged had he not gone wrong in July just when a tempting array of rich prizes were being offered for a meeting with him Equipoise and other stars Truly his marvelous record entitles him to join the illustrious winners of the Kentucky Derby whose names were Hindoo Leenatus Spokane Riley Halma Ben Brush Lieut Gibson Sir Huon Old Rosebud Regret Omar Khayyam Sir Bar ¬ ton Exterminator Zev Gallant Fox Reigh Count and Twenty Grand Thoroughbreds all and better still great horses every one deserving the appellation great for they could and did do all things well sprint stay or race with success over the intermediate distances in which great horses and great sprinters meet almost on a level levelBubbling Bubbling Over could be added to the roll of honor So could Black Gold and few would dispute their claim to inclusion in the select list but one had a career meteoric but all too short and the other was close to a great horse but somehow did not quite reach the standard set Sentiment probably more than anything else would prompt ad ¬ mirers of Black MidSum mer Derby Saratoga Cup Lawrence Reali zation and The Jockey Club Gold Cup He had all the requisites of a truly great horse extraordinary speed weight carrying ability and stamina to race as far as thoroughbreds are asked to go in these modern days His recent attempt to stage a comeback after an unsuccessful season in the stud attdcd much glamor to the training for and the running of the 100000 Santa Anita Handi ¬ cap is still fresh in mind He is now in England training at Newmarket for some of the notable long distance events of the summer and fall
