TOM SMITH PUTS NEW PLATES ON MIDLAND BEFORE SUBURBAN SUBURBANNEW NEW YORK N Y May 30 Tom Smith has put the plates on a good many race horses in his time In fact he was a better than average horseshoer in the old days out West and it was a lucky thing this morning for Mioland and the C S Howard barn artThe that he had not forgotten the art The Howard colt had to have a new set of plates for the Suburban He had to have them right now and there was not a plater around His regular one had not shoyn up and they could not locate another so Silent Tom rolled up his sleeves donned his old leather apron brought out his tools arid went to work In short order Mioland was standing on new plates and awaiting the bugle for the Suburban This is probably the first time in many a moon when a trainer shod his own horse for a major stakes engagement I didnt mind the work said Tom but some of these old muscles are going to be a bit stiffened up tomorrow
