LOCAL FANS ARE ROOTING FOR WHIRLAWAY TO WIN BELMCNI BELMCNIWright Wright Would Then Have Strong Hand for First Classic Victory VictoryCRETE CRETE 111 June 4 Windy City racing fans are rooting for Whirlaway to win the Belmont Stakes Saturday in a gallop because with that victory behind him he will add just that much more to the programs at Arlington and Washington Parks He would thus become winner of the American Triple Crown The Arlington Classic which will be run at the North Side course on July 26 is definitely one of Whirlaways objectives this year Calumet Farms good son of Blenheim II Dustwhirl will be pointed for that feature event of the Chicago season after he completes his New York invasion because Wright would like to win the Clas ¬ sic the most important event of the racing season in this section with the greatest horse he has ever owned ownedWright Wright tried to win the 1934 Arlington Classic with Hadagal a son of Sir Galla had III Erne who now stands at his Calu ¬ met Farm in Kentucky along with Bull Lea Bostonian and Chance Play but the best that colt could dp was to finish third to Caval ¬ cade and Discovery He also tried to win the Classic with Bull Lea and Count Morse but in each instance he was doomed to dis ¬ appointment Count Morse finished fourth behind Granville Mr Bones and Hollyrood in the 1936 running of the Arlington Park race Bull Lea did better betterRECALL RECALL CLASSIC STAKES OF 1938 1938When When it became evident that the three yearolds of 1938 were beating one another and that honors were evenly distributed when Classic time rolled around Wright thought he was going to win the Chicago feature with his son of Bull Dog Rose Leaves The prerace sizeup was that the winner would come from among Stagehand Bull Lea Menow and Cravat When the numbers were hung up however the final result was Nedayr Bull Lea and Cravat Nedayr was owned at that time by Willis Sharpe Kilmer KilmerBull Bull Lea retired to the stud with the rec ¬ ord of having won the Kenner Blue Grass Stakes Thornton Memorial and Widener Cup among others but it is probable that the Chicagoan would have swapped victory in any of those races for the pleasure of seeing his colors in the winners circle after the Classic ClassicIf If any colt can give him that pleasure it would appear to be Whirlaway already winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness The Classic is a mile and one quarter test in which such good ones as Twenty Grand Top Flight Head Play Dis ¬ covery Pompoon Stagehand and Johnstown went down to defeat but the Derby and Preakness were also firstclass tests over a mile and a quarter in which many good horses were beaten and Whirlaway success ¬ fully passed those tests in such a manner that he has been called the greatest since this or that horse by many who can take good long hikes down Memory Lane with no more difficulty than we remember what hap ¬ pened yesterday
