ANNIRALS FALL IN MEADOW BROOK CHASE PROVES FATAL FATALHitchcocks Hitchcocks Crack Fencer Suffers Internal Hemorrhage in Mishap MishapNEW NEW YORK N Y June 4 The fall An nibal who performed for Thomas Hitchcock took In the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont Park yesterday proved to be fatal though his injuries appeared no more serious than wrenched neck and side muscles as he was taken from the course in the horse ambulance immediately after the race While being1 rubbed out at the Hitchcock stable late in the day Annibal suddenly suffered a hemorrhage and fell to the ground He was destroyed The gray gelding was injured internally when he som ¬ ersaulted over the fence known as the fatal fifth because it is the fifth hazard in Belmonts about twomile steeplechases and the scene of a number of fatalities fatalitiesAnnibal Annibal was an eightyearold gray geld ¬ ing by Chubasco from Alliance For some years he was rated one of the best if not the leader of the steeplechase division The Meadow Brook marked his first appearance in a year or since he defeated Ossabaw in the Red Cross Special a match at Belmont Park on Charity Day last year He also won the Charles L Appleton Memorial Cup last spring and three years ago his victories included the Grand National and the Manly Memorial MemorialAnnibal Annibal was the leading steeplechase gleaner of the year in 1938 when he won six of seven starts and 21800
