LYMAN H DAVIS SR PASSES AWAY IN LOUISVILLE HOME HOMEWas Was Racing Secretary at Downs and Other Tracks Years Ago AgoLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky June 16 Last rites for Lyman H Davis Sr 71 rated one of the better known handicappers and racing secretaries in America around the turn of the century will be held here tomorrow Burial will be in Covington Ky KyThe The veteran official died at his home near Churchill Downs at which track he served as racing secretary for years late Saturday night Death was attributed to complications which set in from a broken hip which he suffered three weeks ago when he slipped and fell from a porch Mr Davis first became associated with racing at Latonia in 1893 as a stable clerk at Latonia A close follower of thorough ¬ breds and a student of handicapping he rose rapidly Several years later he was ap ¬ pointed secretary and handicapper at New ¬ port and in 1899 accepted similar posit ns with the old Worth track near Chicago ChicagoIn In 1903 Mr Davis came to Churchill Downs as assistant secretary and handicap ¬ per He was elevated to the post of secre ¬ tary in 1905 Later he served in similar and Various other capacities at Empire City Juarez Indianapolis and Columbus ColumbusIn In recent years Mr Davis had been in failing health but this did not prevent him from making his daily visits to Churchill Downs He seldom missed a day during the recent spring meeting and spent hours re ¬ newing friendships with old horsemen and officials he had known since the early 1900s 1900sSurviving Surviving the veteran official are his widpw and four sons
