HOLLYWOOD IN MIDST OF INVESTIGATIONS INVESTIGATIONSStimulation Stimulation of Horses Alleged by Chairman of Racing Board Grooms Threaten Another Strike StrikeINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif June 16 While a program for the benefit of the American Red Cross was being presented here today Hollywood Park was a hot bed of charges countercharges investigations into the al ¬ leged stimulation of horses threats of a strike among grooms and a movement among some horsemen to have Jerry Giesler cairman of the California Horse Racing Board removed from that office officeIn In the midst of investigations to fix re ¬ sponsibility for the presence of caffeine in the aliva tests on nine horses which ran here recently it was revealed that federal authorities were looking f ntp the sale to stables of a quantity of pough syrup said to contain morphine These sales were reported to have been made in San Francisco during the meetingMeanwhile recent Bay Meadows meeting Meanwhile a number of grooms unable to reach a salary agreement in a conference with stable owners Sunday are threatening to go on strike tomorrow Further attempts to mediate their difficulties were being made today The efforts to have Giesler removed from the racing board grew out of the disclosure that horses belonging to some of the most prominent stables on the grounds had been stimulated The chairman said however th t he will not voluntarily resign from his position while under fire fireHORSEMEN HORSEMEN SIGN PETITION PETITIONA A petition signed by many of the most prominent owners here and asking the re ¬ moval of Giesler is to be presented to Gov ¬ ernor Olson it was said Included among the signers are several owners in addition to nine called to Saturdays open hearing fol ¬ lowing positive urinalysis tests showing the presence of caffeine in their horses horsesThe The protest on the part of the owners is based primarily on chairman Gieslers strict interpretation of the California ruling which holds that owners and trainers are in Gies ¬ lers words Absolute insurers of and re ¬ sponsible for the condition of race horses entered in races regardless of the acts Of third persons personsOwner Owner Neil S McCarthy stated Such a statement of responsibility makes it abso ¬ lutely unsafe for owners and trainers to race their horses in California CaliforniaIn In connections with the stimulated horses two salient facts have been pointed out by trainers First two of the horses in question were twoyearolds and n third an untried threeyearold and even in the worst of days it was never the practice to stimu ¬ late such young horses Second several of the horses in question and particularly Painted Veil ran better races subsequent to those after which a positive urinalysis was taken than in the races in which the alleged stimulation took place placeIt It is further pointed out that while caf ¬ feine is technically a stimulant it is ex ¬ tremely mild in its action and is present as a dieuretic in virtually all kidney remedies used for horses horsesGIESLER GIESLER ISSUES NOTICE NOTICEIn In answer to repeated threats by a num ¬ ber of horsemen that they intend to ship their horses away from California Jerry Giesler today issued the following notice noticeThe The undersigned Jerry Giesler chairman of the California Horse Racing Board does not intend to quit quitIf If the owners intend to stop racing at Hollywood Park because I remain as they are reported in the public press please give the board notice at least twentyfour hours before you quit so that the public will not be inconvenienced and so that Hollywood Park will not be embarrassed by the sud ¬ den suspension of this meeting meetingIt It is your privilege to surrender your license if you do not trust the California Horse Racing Board or me meAny Any license so surrendered will be imme ¬ diately canceled and such cancellation shall remain in effect permanently permanentlySigned Signed Jerry Giesler Chairman California Horse Racing Board BoardP P S If the published statements are incorrect please disregard this notice noticeJ J G
