Ahamo Victorious in Firethorn Purse Romps Home Three Lengths in Front FrontSon Son of Omaha Quick to Gain Lead and Then Proceeds to Lead Bright Gallant to Wire WireELMONT ELMONT L I N Y May 13 While a stylish Belmont Park attendance of 13378 looked on expectantly from the nervous edge of their seats The Barrington Stables favored Ahamo galloped four other routers into unconditional surrender in the mile and onehalf of the Firethorn feature of todays offday program at the huge Nas ¬ sau County course Jockey Convertible Conn McCreary was only coasting on the frontrunning son of Omaha as he skipped past the stands with three lengths of spring ¬ time showing before Isador Biebers stake winner Bright Gallant the runnerup runnerupFar Far from entertaining any delusions of overhauling Ahamo Bright Gallant was preoccupied with beating Greentree Sta ¬ bles Corydon by a half length in a skirmish for the place award Welcome Pass and Bally Boy completed the field racing far back throughout this jaunt of once around the outsize Belmonfc Park main course courseEligible Eligible to Metropolitan MetropolitanAhamo Ahamo is among the less formidable eligi bles for the Metropolitan and Suburban Handicaps at this meeting He nevertheless was only inches behind Boysy in earning place honors in last weekends important Grey Lag Handicap and their confidence stimulated by that performance the public made Omahas lanky son favorite for the Firethorn He returned 6 for 2 after negotiating the route in 230 on a track described as good which in racing par ¬ lance indicates it was something less than good actually actuallyIt It is probable that McCrearys skill had something to do with Ahamos triumph He permitted the Chicagoan to move along at his own pace while blazing the trail where ¬ as Bright Gallant and Corydon were throt ¬ tled down the first mile arid a quarter As so often occurs they then could not accel ¬ erate their speed appreciably when placed to a drive driveMcCreary McCreary incidentally was completing a riding double in the feature while a sprinkling of liberally backed runners man ¬ aged to escape the jinx that traditionally pursues Belmonfs favorite favoriteAhamo Ahamo made winning the Firethorn look absurdly simple He outran Bright Gallant to the first turn opened up daylight and was permitted to breeze on the lead to the head of the stretch stretchThere There Bright Gallant and Corydon who had been restrained in third place went from a pull to a drive But Ahamo per ¬ mitted to run his own race and at a leisurely pace had more left than either of those displaying their moves He won very comfortably comfortablyBright Bright Gallant was hard pressed to repel Corydon for the show
