Old Lady and Her Admirers AdmirersThe The Widow winner of the Cambridge ¬ shire n 1847 had rather a remarkable career Her dam died soon after her birth and she had to be brought up on milk served through the spout of a kettle Her owner gave her to a bailiff as a present but he in turn was glad to rid himself of her at a cost of 50 to a Pinner gentle ¬ man who simply turned The Widow to grass along with his cows When she was nearly five years old she was broken in and ridden as a hack She soon became the talk of the denizens of Hyde Park be i cause of her penchant for setting a gallop unattained by any other hack Thus she came to be put into training and was pur ¬ chased by Mr Leigh who entered her for the Cambridgeshire and backed her to win him 50000 Others Joined in the good thing but the bookmakers only laughed at what they said was all Hyde Park to a Widows weeds chance and the aged mare was allowed to start at 33 to 1 She finished as fresh as a twoyearold much to the delight of all the Knightsbridge grooms who knew the Old Lady
