Ballyarnett Leads Yar Across Finish FinishTakes Takes Command at Start and Remains in Van Throughout Hi Diddle in Surprise Win WinLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 14 Ballyarnett a representative of Rivermont Ranch and well ridden by apprentice Chalmer Basham was a surprise victor in the Southern Heights Purse one of the better offerings at Churchill Downs today Taken to the front immediately Ballyarnett held sway the entire mile trip and reached the wire threequarters of a length before Dr C N Finchs Yar who was a half length in advance of Mrs J F Hines Gold Teddy Only five started in the test Cohen Broth ¬ ers favored Cerberus and Mrs Frances D Scullys Ponty following the placed horses home in that order orderStarter Starter Ruby White lost little time with the small field at the post sending the horses away in perfect alignment Basham sent the victor into the lead at once while Ponty moved up fast on the inside going to the first quarter post and only a length off the leader leaving the chute Cerberus was lapped on Ponty while Yar was no better than fourth and Gold Teddy last lastBallyarnett Ballyarnett continued to set the pace in good style shaking off Ponty after reach ¬ ing the upper turn and then held on well enough thereafter to withstand the belated bid of Yar who closed determinedly Cer ¬ berus also made a threatening move in the stretch but faltered nearing the end and gave way to Gold Teddy who finished stoutly stoutlyHi Hi Diddle Takes Beechmont Purse PurseThe The popular silks of LieutCol Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Were carried to a sur ¬ prise victory in the Beechmont Purse six and onehalf furlongs secondary attrac ¬ tion Hard ridden during the final quarter by Charles Swain Hi Diddle a homebred daughter of Equipoise and High Glee came to the finish a length and onehalf before River Divide Farms Dr Rush as the latter bested John Greeners Clarksville by a head margin marginHi Hi Diddle found the soft footing to her liking and completed her task in 120 commendable time after which she re ¬ warded her scattered supporters with a 3060 straight mutuel return returnKept Kept off the early pace while racing in the better going Hi Diddle began her win ¬ ning bid after being settled in the stretch Although she lost some ground on the final turn the Whitney filly disposed of Dr Rush Big Meal and Clarksville in that order during the drive and appeared ready to draw clear at the close closeAn An excellent crowd turned out for the semifinal day of the Kentucky spring sea ¬ son and several public choices were suc ¬ cessful in reaching the winners circle Wagering was brisk throughout the mati ¬ nee and an active atmosphere prevailed at the famous derby course courseW W J Sprows Rockwood Boy earned an easy graduation victory in the third race which matched a dozen maiden juveniles at five furlongs Mike Caffarella who com ¬ pleted a double had the mount on Rock wood Boy and took his mount to the front at the start permitting the victor to in ¬ crease his advantage to five lengths at the finish Thats Easy took second hon ¬ ors by a head margin over Margaret T who earned the minor end of the purse over Federal Tax by a scant nose Rock wood Boy raced the sprint distance in 103 and paid 420
