Horsemen Will Ballot On Claiming Rule Today TodayMeeting Meeting Called for 1 30 P M In Clubhouse at Stickney Oval OvalSTICKNEY STICKNEY 111 June 5 The question of what if anything to do about the claiming race regulations now in force in this State will be discussed and a definit preference determined by closed ballot at a meeting of horsemen to be held in the clubhouse at the Hawthorne track here on Monday at 130 p m The meeting called today by Monte Weil a vicepresident of the Horsemens Benevolent Protective Association is open to all horsemen whether members of the HBPA or not All horsemen are urged to attend attendThe The present claiming system is not working well according to Weil and other horsemen and agitation to scrap it iu favor of the more popular of several sug ¬ gested substitutes has been rampant here since last year Principal opposition to the present rule is based on the fact that it is responsible for inconsistent racing and therefore unfair to the fan the horse and the horsemen Weil stated statedSuggested Suggested substitutes for the present claiming code include the old closed rule under which only owners represented in a race may exercise the privilege of claiming a participant in that particular race with ¬ out being required to run the horse for a higher price the next 30 days the present rule minus the stipulation that a horse acquired by the claiming procedure cannot race for the next 30 days for less than 25 percent more than the amount for which hewas claimed a rule under which an owner losing a horse in a claiming race won by his horse would receive 20 percent more from the claimant whereas a horse failing to win the race from which he is claimed would change hands at his en ¬ tered price and several others othersA A committee of horsemen will present the claiming race poll to the Illinois Racing Board at a special meeting of that body on Tuesday
