CaliforniaBreds Status Clarified in New Law LawMust Must Be Conceived and Foaled in State Effective Sept 1 1945 1945LOS LOS ANGELES Calif June 10 Horses foaled m California will be regarded as Californiabred no matter where they were conceived until September 1 1945 A bill to that effect and known as the Gannon Bill was signed by Governor Earl Warren in Sacramento Monday Following the date specified a thoroughbred must have been both conceived and foaled in the state to be eligible for Californiabred races and stakes stakesSome Some breeders have in the past sent their mares to Kentucky or other eastern farms to be mated with prominent sires and have then returned the matrons to California to foal thereby making the off ¬ spring eligible to Californiabred races The most noted example in the past year was that of War Knight who as a two yearold won the California homebred stakes at Bay Meadows last fall The Stimulus mare Chosa was sent to the court of High Quest by Miss Ethel Hill of Los Angeles and War Knight was the result resultThe The Gannon Bill means that foals of this year will be eligible to participate as twoyearolds in Californiabred races for the greater part of their twoyearold year but that those conceived this year must be the product of the mating of sire and dam on California soil to qualify for such races
