REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan What of the Three YearOlds Bounding Home WellBred Horse Those Winter Months Do Things Twilight TearDurazna Due to Meetj MeetjNEW NEW YORK N Y June 5 Shades of Jim Dandy and what do you thing of the threeyearolds Regard ¬ less of what we think Bounding Home garnered 55000 for the Ziegler coffers by winning the Belmont Stakes in 2 32 and when the trotters over at Westbury heard about it they were all for quitting the harness racket and moving over where the grass is greener and the gold is wrapped in bieeer bundles In the race following the Belmont Sickle s Choice ran the same distance in 232 the track record being Bolingbrokes 227 It was the slowest Belmont since Hurryoff won in 232 back in 1933 So if time means anything to you there are the records as Al Smith would say Pensive gave his all and gamely but Bounding Home was go ¬ ing away at the finish and was the best horse as the race was run The Ziegler threeyearold is not as fashionably bred as Pensive but he is a much better bred horse than many racing today being by Espino out of Marching Home by John P Grier Analyze that and you get a picture entitling Bounding Home to membership on the impressive list of Belmont stakes winners winnersEspino Espino the sire of Bounding Home was foaled in 1923 and is by Negofol out of Rose Leaves by Bal ¬ lot Rose Leaves was a splendid mare for besides Espino she pro ¬ duced the stakes winners Rubb Bois de Rose Nectarine Dogpatch and Bull Lea the brilliant young sire now standing at Calumet Farm Nectarine is a sister to Bull Lea and at Meadow Brook last August Wil ¬ liam Helis went to 813100 to buy her chestnut colt named Pindus sired by Chance Shot So tracing to St Simon in his male line Espino could boast of fine breeding top and bottom He was a good race horse but unfortunate to be out in a year with such colts as Crusader Dis ¬ play Mars and other topnotchers Retired to stud he has comparatively few foals the best of which was that hardhitting mare Esposa whose colt Esteem by Stimulus ran third in the National Stallion Stakes on the same card in which Bounding Home brought even greater glory to the Ziegler sire who is now 21 years old At that age he is on the shady side but even should he accomplish no more a pair such as Esposa and Bounding Home speak highly of his class j jThe The Belmont result is just another indi ¬ cation that twoyearold form in many cases is no yardstick of threeyearold form As a juvenile Bounding Home start ¬ ed seven times and while he was in the money on four occasions he was retired to the barn a non winner thus a maiden when he came out for his threeyearold career He had won two races this year and was five times in the money out of six starts If you go a bit further you will note that three of the four first horses in the Belmont were not even rated in the Experi ¬ mental Handicap That is not the fault of John B Campbell who year in and year out is uncanny in his ratings But it is an indication that the ratings of twoyear olds are not to be taken too seriously some liorses grow more and they develop more speed in those winter months which span the two and threeyearold careers Wil ¬ liam Ziegler Jr and his wily trainer Matt Brady bided their time and instead of shooting at the Derby and Preakness brought their horse up to his peak for this mile and a half test testAlthough Although Arlington at Washing ¬ ton Park will open in two weeks and some good threeyearolds will go there the division still has many rich events to contest in the East At Aqueduct the 810000 Shevlin will be contested on June 17 and on the following weekend the 850000 Dwyer will be run Bounding Home is eligible for both Delaware Park offers the Kent Handicap while the Suffolk Downs feature on July 4 will be the 25000 added Yankee Handi ¬ cap At Washington Park in Chi ¬ cago threeyearold fillies will swing into action on June 28 with the 10000 Princess Doreen Stakes and the colts on July 6 in the 10000 Skokie Handicap Twilight Tear will be ready again and dont be too sur ¬ prised if Ben Jones sends her to challenge the colts in some of those rich races And dont be surprised if she pins their ears back The PensivePlatter duel fizzled out and now attention will be turned to that between Twilight Tear and Durazni when they hdok up In one of those Chicago events
