Tip Gallant took a prominent position early in the race and, when commencing the last half, raced into the lead and was winning comfortably in the stretch, but Wilson, oblivious of everything, was easing up and was caught napping right at the end. Foxhunter blundered frequently and, being continually forced to make up ground between fences, tired in the final drive. Perion followed the pacemaker closely and, gaining at every jump, appeared like the winner for nearly two miles, when he suddenly fell away. Gum Honey shied at the very first obstacle and fell over it, interfering with Semper Ira, which then refused. Young Henry is again in form, was outrun to the stretch turn, where he loomed up, going like a steam engine and driving hard in the stretch, finally wore Duke of Kendal down at the end, winning going away. The latter raced to the front on the turn and seemed like a sure winner, but after a game effort succumbed. Kingraine lost ground on the turn and finished fast. The Carmelite ran poorly and was never dangerous. Saccharometer forced a stiff pace for about three furlongs and quit. Scratched— 362862Unmasked, 132; 39322 Armeath, 119. Young Henry, show, evens. Inflexible led throughout and plainly had the most speed of his field at all stages. Mimosa beat the barrier and kept as close to her stable companion as she could right from the start and, when beginning the last quarter, failed to come on and pass the waiting Inflexible, which was then compelled to go on as danger threatened from Monsoon. The filly just saved second place and Redfern was fined 00 by the stewards for not allowing Mimosa to win according to declaration before the race. Monsoon closed a big gap from a bad start and at the end was going as fast as the winner. Bob Murphy got away very badly and worked through next to the rail, finishing fast and running a particularly good race. Gallant made up many lengths in the last quarter. Won easily; second the same. Shorthose trailed the field early and commenced his move on the backstretch, picking up the field rapidly. He turned into the stretch at the leaders heels and ran over fast in the stretch and was much the best. The stewards are looking into this contradictory colts running. Charles Elwood was another and marked instance of sudden improvement. . He made such fast running that Whorler could never get to him and sustained his speed in. impressive style and, single-handed, could probably have taken the winners measure today. Whorler probably grew discouraged when he found himself outrun by Charles Elwood, as he certainly showed the white feather at the end in only just getting home ahead of River Pirate. The latter was anchored by the big weight, but made an extra good showing, due to his predeliction for the sloppy going and he was wearing Whorler down for third place at the end. Meltonian went well for seven furlongs and tired and was evidently greatly handicapped by the going. Scratched— 39419Reliable, 126; 38854 Dauphin, 126; 39744 Merry Acrobat, 126.
