Winner— Ch. c, by Hastings— Toscana trained by A. Pryor. Went to post at 2:30. At post 4 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second the e same. Toscan is a genuinely improved colt. After racing nead and head with W. R. Condon _ for a quarter Burns, allowing the latter to take the lead around the far turn, then n shot Toscan to the front when they straightened for home, coming away gamely at the e end. Ascension got away several lengths behind the leaders and closed up considerable e ground, finishing with a rush. W. R. Condon forced the pace to the stretch, where he e was taken -into the deep going, tiring in consequence. Van Ness broke in front, but was s unable to keep his advantage and McCafferty was too weak to do him justice. He ran n throughout on his own courage and could probably have won with a vigorous rider. Young g Henry broke flatfooted and at once had to pull out from his rail position and go around. j He moved up fast on the far turn, but tired at the end. Rostand labored in the going, but !t ran a steady race and finished very fast. Scratched— 398902Yardarm, 110; 39866 Morokanta, 108; 397192Minotaur, 100. Toscan, show, 7 to 10. Fire Eater got away badly, but gradually moved up and, going to the front at the half, won eased up, was much the best today and particularly favored by the stiff going. Payne appeared the fittest of the other two and outstayed Monte Carlo. He does not seem to have trained Into anything above the ordinary. Monte Carlo was on the big side and about half fit, is a colt of fine substance this year and will be heard from. Race King improved suddenly and was in great form today. He made the running throughout and gamely held his own in a long drive through the stretch. Greencrest was held at the post and got away badly, went wide on the turn and, coming from a long way back, closed up in the stretch with a tremendous rush and was probably best. Tim Payne worked a rough journey on the bend and finished like a cyclone. Toledo followed the winners pace closely to the stretch, where he was under a hard drive, but was unable to get up and at the end, tired badly and was probably handicapped by the slow going. Bob Murphy found the going too difficult to show his best form. Monsoon, evidently much better in sloppy going, was always outrun and failed to stay. Rockaway was practically left. Blues was in a soft spot and made his own pace. Luckily no one bothered him and he consequently held on well. Still, he was doing his best at the end. Hunter Raine was out of place in such a short race and, outran for the first three furlongs, he closed a tremendous gap in the last half and finished running faster than the winner. Himself was restrained in behind the winner for six furlongs and was only called on in the stretch. Dr. Saylor was never dangerous and disliked the going. His Eminence only went about five furlongs today and is in bad form apparently. Igniter ran a bad race and his showing is not to his true form. Articulate has developed either into a confirmed sulker or he has trained off completely. He looks well bodily. He made up much ground, drew out right at the end with rare gameness and won going away. Modred forced the pace throughout and held on very gamely. Alliance was easily the best and is a coming crackerjack. He was badly messed about and almost knocked down on the turn and when, with clear sailing in the last fur-: long, closed up with a sensational rush. Steelmaker figured as a prominent contender lip to the final sixteenth. Pol Roger finished fast. Escobar appeared dangerous as the field straightened for home. Winner— Ch. m, by Potentater-Strathrine trained by R. C. Hall. Went to post at 4:55. At post 3 minutes. Start fair. Won driving; second easily. Lady Potentate steadily improved her position, closing a tremendous gap from a bad start" and finished out the last sixteenth with an electrical rush. Arden, on the rail throughout and off in the lead, had a lot the best of it all through, but showed speed enough to hold his position and from the half appeared to be nearly a certainty, but the winner dropped from the clouds at the end. Satire, nearly left, made up an immense amount of ground and ran a really remarkable race. Oclawaha, after figuring as a prominent contender for nearly a mile, fell away right at the end. Carroll D. worked a rough journey from an indifferent start and when a furlong out loomed up dangerously, only to tire badly in the last fifty yards. Spring Silk got away well, but was outrun and kept in a pocket. Bob Hilliard was buffeted about from start to finish. Squanto was always outrun and can do better. , Scratched— 39819Irish Jewel, 115; 398913Scoffer, 100. Corrected weights — Squanto, 103.
