BERRY MAIDS SPEEDY RACE DEFEATS ADRIANA AND EXPLOSION FOR THE BELDAME HANDICAP. Spooner Scores a Fast Mile Jack Atkin Takes Another Race Favorites i . Again Fare Poorly. t New York, November 13. Spoonor demonstrated at Aqueduct tliis afternoon that lie is the right sort of :t two-year-old and the chances arc that lit; will lie one of the toil-notch three-year-olds next season. He won the all-aged handicap from excellent competitors, while by the scale he was Riving away from live pounds all the way to forty-two pounds to the other starters. He was as good as 4 to 1 in the belting, while Bedouin, particularly well thought of by his connections, was the 2 to 1 favorite at the close of the market. Gretna Green was the only other one that was seriously considered. Spooner was ridden by Sumter and. incidentally, lie gave a much better account of himself than did Miller the last time the colt started. Oil that occasion, in a seven furlongs race, Miller rushed the two-year-old out as though riding a five-furlong dash and, as a result, he tired and was beaten through the last sixteenth by Jack Atkin. Today Sumter took Spooner to the front at the rise of the barrier and he was content to rate him in that position. A furlong from home Gretna Green, Martin Doyle and Bedouin closed up on him in dangerous fashion and Sumter was forced to go to the whip. The colt responded gamely and, out-liniushiiig the older horses, came on to win easily by two lengths. It was another disappointing day for the backers of favorites, only two of the choices being first home. They were Beauclere, which scored in the mile and a half and Jack Atkin, which won the sprint handicap at the end of the program. The feature of the day was the Beldame Handicap, a live furlongs dash over the straight course for two-year-old fillies. It was won by Kerry Maid, but was a race that was full of swerving and fouling and it was by 110 means truly run, though possibly Kerry Maid was best. In the early stages Explosion, the top weight, went out to make pace, with Kerry Maid and Adriana in close attendance. Kerry Maid had an outside position and when Sumter began to urge her, she bore over until she had crowded Adriana across Explosion, in .1 measure interfering with the Newcastle Stable filly. As Miller moved for the middle of the track. Explosion was cut off a second tme and she had no chance thereafter. Within the last sixteenth Kerry Maid cut off Adriana sharply and, after the race, E. Dngan, who rode the Whitney lilly, made a claim of foul, which was not allowed. The tabled history of the Beldame Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1905 Klip Flap 11C Shaw ,570 1:00 190 Veil 120 Shaw 1.3S0 09 1107 Kerry Maid 119 Sumter ... 1.0G5 1:00s Senator Karrett upset caluclations by maintaining his speed for six and a half fulongs and defeating Ainiee 0., one of the well backed choices of the day. Troublemaker was another that came in the way of a surprise. Green Seal was the one selected and he was backed almost to the exclusion of all the others. In the running it was Green Seal to the stretch, where Troublemaker came along resolutely and at the end won going away. James Kowe, trainer for James It. Keene, has left for Toledo. A brother of George Koles put in an appearance at the track early iu the afternoon, but lie was not seen about long. It is probable that the Boles embargo takes in the family. f Archie Ziuimer will campaign six of the horses of H. K. Duryea at New Orleans this winter. In her race today Whip Top was badly cut down and may have to be temporarily retired.
