TRAINER GRIFFIN ONE OF THE OLD SCHOOL SCHOOLJames James Oriflin who is racing Czar nowadays Is one of the oldtimers of the turf having first en ¬ gaged in the business away back In 1S81 While WhileMr Mr Griffin has never had the handling of any anyreally really great horse a rare one such as a Colin or a Sysonby yet he lias trained many a good one Some of the best that he lias sent to the post in winning fettle were the fast mare Audrey the sprinter Nickie I Lavidia dam of Czar David a horse just short of first class Frontenac and Hustcd These are only a few of many useful ones that have borne his colors to victory For the last six or seven years Grillin and J S McCullough state auditor of Illinois have raced a small stable on a partnership share basis Mr McCullough breed ¬ ing and buying the racing material and Mr Grillin training and managing them themAt At his farm at Urbana 111 Mr McCullough has the horse Ineonimon a son of the English Common and sire of Czar Hurst Park and a dozen or more choice broodmares Uncommon was imported in utero by James It Keene and bought from Mr Keene for the Urbana farm Hurst Park a very finelybred horse by Kingston out of a full sister to the great Melton is merely leased from Mr Keenr His present crop of sucklings are the first of his get and are showing so promisingly that Hurst Park will very likely be sent back to Mr Keenes Castleton farm at Lexington another sea ¬ son Mr Crllliu recently visited the farm to look over tins young stock and thinks some good racing material will be found among them One of the sucklings by Hurst Park out of Huron Fairy a halfsister to Huron and out of the famous Cali ¬ fornia maro Fairy he thinks particularly well of There are about a dozen sucklings at the farm and as many yearlings eight of the latter being by Fiontcnac himself a wellbred horse being by Kingston out of a halfsister to St Gatlen GatlenMr Mr Critiin believes that if no mishaps befall he will have a really good handicap horse in Czar another season Last year the colt was so growthy that little was done with him In fact he has not yet reached a muscular development proportionate to his frame but lie is constantly improving in training and he only needs to go on well to be a colt of considerable quality before the season ends Mr Gritliu is one of the old school of conservative trainers He does not believe in forcing a horse to io things that lie cannot do or of drumming away at them when their physical development or comlition does not warrant it With only moderate material he has frequently raced In the east suc ¬ cessfully
