ft + CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE SEAGATE STAKES + — * Another of tlie Brighton Beach stakes adopted by the Empire City Racing Association, the Seagate, is an event to be remembered by Chicago patrons of racing, for it was in this race that the last winner of the American Derby, the ill-fated Highball, broke down so Irretrievably that he had to lie destroyed. It is not a race of long history, hut its conditions sufficed to attract good horses and it lias been won by such first-magiiitude stars of racing as Bthelbert, Gold Heels, sir Huon ami Charles Edward. Tin1 latter in his year gave in the Seagate one of the most amazing displays of high class speed ever witnessed, covering its mile and an eighth in 1:50%, witii 126 pounds up. and winning in a canter by six lengths. Naturally Charles Edward was one of the fastest horses ever bred in America and but for being cursed with infirm forelegs would probably have done tilings in a racing way almost beyond belief. The record of the Seagate is as follows: Veer. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Vat.
