LIVE TURF GOSSIP FROM SARATOGA Tommy Griffin Hopeful for a Revival of California Racing Wm Walkers Agent Seriously Injured BY ED COLE COLESARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 1 Tommy Griffin was about the Saratoga paddock today He is fresirtrom California where he has located as a native and hones some day to see racing revived in that state I dont know when we shall race again he said but I feel that as soon as this state of unrest has subsided some of the big men will get together like Mr Rosseter Mr Macomber Mr Rudolph Spreckels and others 6f exceptional standing in the community and lend a helping hand Such men can do much toward the revival of the sport on a high plane which is what the Californlans want Some people think Mr Spreckels is opposed to racing He is not but he wants it conducted itw such manner that criticism will not be forth ¬ coming The whole thing resolves itself Into a question of a representative jockey club being formed by representative people and there are suf ¬ ficient in San Francisco alone to further the cause Mr Griffin will remain east during this meeting arid probably see a few days at Belmont Park after which he will return to his ranch and rest peacefully from race course excitement excitementBob Bob Rose is here He had some important busi ¬ ness to transact in San Francisco but he postponed his trip there to spend a month in Saratoga SaratogaLeo Leo Mayor was sweet on all the faVoritcs before the races started and predicted it would be a fair day As usual he will divide his time between playing horses and playing a favorite every now and then Three boat loads of passengers came up from New York last night Not all of them stopped off at Saratoga but the majority did didMortimer Mortimer Lynch will be a visitor in the clubhouse after ii lay off of a week or two due to indispo ¬ sition I have to make Saratoga said Mr Lynch it being my health provider for the remainder of the season then I go to Lakewood in the winter just to keep Billy Oliver company and pick up a bit more health healthAs As customary Benny Faulk motored down from Detroit for a short season A K MACOMBER AMONG VISITORS VISITORSA A K Macomber has bcearihere for the past two days to be on hand for the season also to see War Cloud perform in the Saratoga Handicap HandicapHarry Harry McLaiighlin fresh from Montreal was on Broadway last night lie speaks confidently about racing in Montreal at the smaller tracks The date of opening is August 9 so he says and meet ¬ ings will probably be held at four tracks tracksHorsemen Horsemen who have seen the old horse Harwood perform over the jumps predict his making a reputation at that sport in the near future This is the horse that Wm Walker would have sold for the proverbial peanut a couple of seasons ago agoNearly Nearly all of the Jockey Club Stewards were present am had luncheon in the clubhouse About the only absentee was MaJ August Belmont who has not been an attendant at the races this year on account of the death of his eldest son August Belmont Jr JrPresident President Shevlin of the Aqueduct track has ar ¬ rived here for the meeting and is living in the mag ¬ nificent cottage On Union avenue which he pur ¬ chased from the late Mr Gleason a prominent turfman thirty years ago agoMorris Morris Lee who has for years been agent for Wm Walker tlie Canadian horse owner was severe ¬ ly injured by a kick from the heels of u horse as he was being taken tothe paddock prior to the fifth race Lee was standing close to the paddock gate and the horse said to be Don Dodge a horse of Mr Walkers became frisky and launching out landed his heels Kijunrely on the head of Mr Leu lie fell in a heap and was taken to the Saratoga Hospital
