TRIAL FOR DERBY HORSES Ben All Handicap Offers Nineteen of Them a Chance to Show Their Best BestLast Last year the Ben AH Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth was run on the fifth day of the Lexing ¬ ton spring meeting and was contested by four yearolds and over exclusively General Haig win ¬ ning over a heavy track with Regalo second and Pictor third This year it will be run on the first day of the meeting and is invested with an extraordinary measure of importance from the fact that nineteen of the horses assigned weights are Kentucky Derby candidates nearly every one of which has been backed in the future books The race thus has the possibility of being a Kentucky Derby trial of high importance One such race is more beneficial to a horse in preparation for a supreme effort than a half dozen stiff exercise gal ¬ lops so it is quite probable we shall see a good Derby contingent under colors in the Uen AH next Saturday SaturdayThe The official handicappers estimate of the rela ¬ tive merits of the nineteen as expressed in pounds is interesting Unbeaten Leonardo II at 109 pounds is asked to concede two pounds to Star Voter four to Pluribus five to lion Hoinmc Be ¬ have Yourself Black Servant and Centimeter and so on down to Firebrand and Trust Official at Of pounds a top and bottom difference of thirteen pounds Considering that Leonardo II is now at 8 to 1 in the future books and Trust Official at 500 to 1 the variation hardly seems sufficient sufficientHowever However all the measuring in this case is from the top weight of 129 pounds assigned the six yearold horse Boniface a great race horse last year and presumably the same now Better trying tackle for the Derby candidates could not be asked for than such older horses as Boniface Busy Signal and Paul Weidel for instance will furnish in this race now close at hand
