GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFOf Tuff Of the new 2yearold star that made his de but at St Louis Thursday the Republic says Ben Bramble a good 2yearold in W L Sim Siam ¬ mons moons stable made his debut at he Fair Grounds yesterday winning the fourth event in a gallop from a more than ordinary lot of good youngsters The Simmons colt is a bay by Bramble 111 Wind the dam of Ed Farroll Farrell The latteris flatteries the star performer of the Simmons stable Ben Bramble greatly resembles Ed purses stakes and sums offered by such societies and won by the horses Plaintiff claims that during the time the horses wore leased to them defendants earned with them the gross sum of 6911 of which he is entitled under the leae lease to half or 345550 but they refuse to pay it to him when demanded by him For a separate cause of complaint he alleges that his assignor J B Haggin Haggling leased to de ¬ fendants fondants in August 1895 on the same terms as the former lease the horses Jay Wheeler Miss Maggie M Sister Beatrice Hanetta Annette and Prin Prink ¬ ciple cripple with which they earned 229650 of which onehalf Neal 114825 is due to him by J B Haggin Haggling and that defendants refused to pay it to him He therefore asks judgment fqr far 460375 and costs Sacramento Record Union May 20 The decisive overthrow of the mighty Ham ¬ burg in the Belmont Stakes does not necessarily imply that he will hereafter fail to run up to the full measure of his fame as a 2yearold However for a while at least it will be 1 Farroll Farrell in conformation Both are shortbar short ¬ reled relied blocky horses although Ed Farrell is of courde course better developed than his 2yearold half brother brotherBen brother Ben Bramble raced away from Pirate Judge and Lee Bruno without half trying appar appear ¬ ently gently He went to the front with a rush soon after the start and won as he pleased with ridiculous ease After the race Brewer Schorr Scorer stated that Ben Bramble was the best colt he had seen this season The St Louis racing public will be better able to express an opinion on the subject after the Simmons colt has met Fausturo Faust and Cathedral CathedralJohn Cathedral John Mackey Mickey has commenced suit in the Superior Court against George Rose and B W Cavanaugh Jr The complaint recites that in August 1896 plaintiff was the owner of five horses Celistia Cellist Geyser Torsina Torsion Tea Rose and Dalion Albion and leased them to defendants who agreed to bear all expenses incurred in their keeping and training and their care and custody to enter and race them in races given by agricultural societies jockey clubs etc and pay plaintiff half the gross assumed that he is a costly disappointment to Mr Daly Dally It should be considered that he was meeting a wellseasoned wellheads colt of high class in Bowling Brook when he might not have been up to concert pitch himself It is quite possible too that the muddy track was not to his liking Whether the old suspicion that he may prove a non stayer slayer will be revived by the result of the Bel Belo ¬ mont remains to be seen but at any rate those who hold to that theory will probably consider their opinion on the subject vindicated We will probably have to wait for the Realization Stakes next month before being able to deter ¬ mine whether Hamburg is a failure or a great 3yearold In the meantime there seems to be no doubt about Plaudit
