PROSPECTS AT NEWPORT NEWPORTThe Newport The managers of the Queen City racetrack back of Newport are hard at work getting everything in readiness for their fall meeting which begins Saturday September 3 and ends Friday September 30 making in all twentyfour twenty days of racing racingDuring racing During the summer a large force of men have been hard at work making fills and regrading regarding this track which at present is in the finest pos ¬ sible sable condition and faster than ever before beforeThe beforetime The main fence on the west side of the track has been set back some distance and a large shed built which will accommodate fifty pri prig ¬ vate ovate vehicles The driveway has also been rolled and metaled medalled making a beautiful avenue avenueThe avenue The exercise track between the track proper and the Licking river has been given consider ¬ able attention and will prove a big conven convene ience Vince for the horsemen in walking and working their horses horsesThere horseshoe There is sufficient stable room at the track to accommodate 600 horses and every stall has already been taken Thoroughbreds are com ¬ ing King in every day and for the past few days many have appeared at the track in person for stable room only to be turned away The rac race ¬ ing King this fall at the Campbell county track prom ¬ ises isles to be of the highest class a majority of the best stables in the west being represented Over 150 horses are coming from St Louis including most of the best horses that have been racing over there A number of the better stables at Chicago have also engaged quarters at New ¬ port while many more will come from the northern circuit circuitCaptain circuit Captain Sam Brown the Pittsburg Pittsburgh million ¬ aire Zaire will have a fine stable of horses there with Performance and other good ones H J Scoggau Conga Stanton Tucker Burns Water house W E Applegate Appellate W M Wallace Talbot Bros Brows W H Laudeman Laundryman J E McKee J B Eespass Espials C C Maffitt Afflict and other wellknown welkin stables will be present with such horses as David Isabey Isabel H S Tobacco Flora Louise Paul Kauvar Kava John Bright Judge Tarvin Arvin Sir Eolla Olla etc With horses of this class some fine sport may be expected expectedNothing expected Nothing has as yet been determined as to the method of betting that will prevail at the New ¬ port meeting which is to begin one week from tomorrow Manager Frank Fowler has not yet abandoned all hope of finding it feasible to give the local racegoers racehorse what they most desire in this direction namely an open betting ring A spe spec ¬ cial cal representative of the Queen City Jockey Club who was sent over to St Louis last week to canvass the matter among the bookmakers who have been doing busi bus ¬ ness at the Fair Grounds brought back assurances from four of the Knights of the Crayon that they would come to Newport if an open betting ring should be decided upon It is not at all certain that others of the dozen or fifteen pencilers pencil at the Mound City would not come over and give the Cincinnati game a trial There are at present two representatives of the Queen City Jockey Club at St Louis men who were in the employ of Mr Fowler while he was booking at the Fair Grounds and who may be supposed to be in touch with the layers of odds over there They have reported to Mr Fowler that nearly all the book ¬ makers now at 3t Louis will come to Newport if invited to do so soI soil I am inclined to think that they are a little too enthusiastic said the Newport manager last night There are only thirteen bookmak bookmark ¬ ers at St Louis and I know that Hugh Jones and two others intend to go direct to California after the close of the St Louis meeting Then Barney Schreiber is sure to go to Chicago and others will do so also I will make an effort though to get a sufficient number of books to come from St Louis to enable us to have an open ring I do not think that we can count on getting any books from Chicago There are sev se ¬ eral feral bookmakers on the ground there who would probably take a chance on a game here if they could find angels to put up the necessary bank rolls for them but the fact that after numerous trials at beating the game they are now on their uppers is not a recommendation that would be accepted by people who might have bank rolls to furnish Chicago then I think is out of the question but I will make a further effort to secure the St Louis contingent I will send another man over there Saturday to endeavor to induce pencilers pencil to come to Newport If I can see a chance to make ends meet or nearly so I will make the betting ring open to all reputable bookmakers Cincinnati Euquner Equine
