ST LOUIS AND SARATOGA DONE Two prominent tracks one west and one east close their racing accounts for the year of grace 1898 today St Louis and Saratoga The St Louis meeting of ninety days has been one of prosperity good management and fairly good racing The city across the big bridge has shown its liking for honorably conducted rac race ¬ ing King and would no doubt afford good support for at least thirty days more but on the whole it is better that the meeting should close within the limits prescribed by law St Louis patrons of the best of open air diversions will be all the keener for the opening of the season of 1899 because of the long months that must elapse before they can see the thoroughbreds in strenuous conten contemn ¬ tion ion over the safe and convenient Fair Grounds track Next year the St Louis officials should divide their ninety days into two meetings with an interval of a month or six weeks so that the pleasant racing weather of August and Septem Septum ¬ ber beer could be included in their turf season Of course the same end could be attained by a later opening than has been customary there thereThis heretics This early closing at St Louis will bring many horses and turfmen Turkmen to take part in Chi ¬ cagos cargos closing months The fresh element will be welcome Gath Garth Timemaker Tidemark Buckvidere Duckier Miss Marion Forbush Forbes Verify Belle of Mem Memo ¬ phis Aphis Watchmaker Gibraltar Ed Farrell Wil Wail ¬ son Fireside and Silver Set are all good horses and most of them will be here along with many lesser lights of horsedom whoredom to swell the attrac attract ¬ tions ions of Harlem and Hawthorne HawthorneIt Hawthorne It is a question whether the Saratoga meeting has been a financial success Could the famous old course at this countrys country most captivating summer resort secure open dates for its meet ¬ ings dings it is more than probable that racing there would be eminently successful from every point of view but under existing conditions it is difficult to make financial ends meet In the main the racing there though as a rule charac characid ¬ terized theorized by small fields has been very good even to the point of breaking several track records As usual western owners captured their full share of the money offered It is to be hoped that the Jockey Club can find a way next year to give the historic old track a better chance in the way of more days free from competition
