W1NSLOW SURPRISES PJSOPLE Forecaster Cox of the United States Signal Sorvica Service having decided that persons betting that Thursdays downpouring downpour was only a Sep ¬ tember ember rain and not the equinoctial storm had won the bookmakers paid off accordingly and as the weather man furnished for Friday the most charming sunshine and air even the losers were satisfied There was the usual large crowd at Harlem where the same nineteen pancilers painkillers displayed the odds and sold their wares with the low commission about quota ¬ tions ions of which the curb stone brokers here and there about the country are so dissatisfied The bookmakers seen this year in Chicago are in nowise more liberal minded than their pre ¬ decessors depressors but the spirit of competition is now so keen as to force men up to close to a Dutch as the 9 13 17 to 1 indicates The track was heavy end holding The day was devoid of incident incidentFor incident For the opening event Friskal Frisk opening at 8 to 5 advanced to 31 to 1 and couldnt couldn't run at all Eliza Blazes was first off to an excellent start St Elena soon headed her as also did Exquisite St Elena didnt didn't last long and when Exquisite struck the home stietch stitch Eliza Blazes and John Sack were next and close up while four lengths back came Waubun Auburn leading the bunch behind Exquisite led to the last six ¬ teenth tenth where J McDonald by hard work got Waubun Auburn to her head and although Waubun Auburn swerved badly at Jho Ho finish hs was first home from Exquisite who easily beat Eliza Blazes ana ofthe often strung out field Friskal Frisk was near the rear rearTime teatime Time at last makes all things even sang the sport If Genna Henna was off badly Thursday she got a flying start Friday Genna Henna quickest to break to a straggling start got two lengths in front in the first fifty yards and never ex ¬ tended she won hands down from Falomacita Valencia beaten an op n length The third place was hotly contested by Andes Blue Lick Silver Tone and Old Fox the former winning the others away back Arthur McKnightgot a par ¬ ticularly inculpably bad start which show his narfiesake aristae is playing no favorites Genna Henna is bred to fly in the mud as both sire and dam Balgowan Blown and Parolee were noted performers in heavy going What er Lou one of the best of western handicap horses whose last previous start was for the Wheeler Handicap at Washington Park scared out the contenders Richard J and Al Fresco thus having practically a walkover although against his chance 2 to 5 might be had the bookmakers saying He may bleed as at his last start On sufferance Red Gidd Giddy led for over fiveeighths firefights of the distance the favorite lying second At the fiist fist turn Uarda Guardia was in the rear but at the turn into the homo stretch as Red Gidd Giddy quit and What or Lou took command she went to the second position and flattered her backers She ran out how ¬ ever and finally had to be whipped hard in order to get the place from Pitfall who at the last quarter was ten lengths behind her Uarda Guardia beat Pitfall off at the finish and was fairly well up to What er Lou who bad been pulled up and was walking walkingSunburst walking Sunburst had an easy thing of it Bloss Loss laid him off in fifth position up the back stietch stitch closed gradually from the last threeeighths to the last threesixteenths and then the race was over Cushings Cushing old horse galloping to the wire Chugnut Chung was never worse than second and so finished beating Double Dummy easily for the place The latter fourth up the back stretch had a tight fit for third money with Overland beaten a neck Pete Kitchen was first and Del Paso II third to the last quarter where both stopped Jack of Hearts and Sunny were out ¬ classed The latter finished up at the last six ¬ teenth tenth post postThe apostate The fifth race was the betting event of the day Greyhurst Greyhounds opening at 3 to 2 was displaced as favorite by Czarowitz Carbonize backed from 4 down to 2 and at the post it was 21 to 1 against either of them and Pinar Pindaric del Rio had been backed from 15 down to 6 to 1 and Moroni Moronic so jumped on that his 15 shrank to 8 to 1 An excellent start and at the turn Greyhurst Greyhounds and Inueudo Innuendo were paired in front Czarowitz Carbonize third Moroni Moronic fourth the latter two close up Last of a straggling lot behind was Pinar Pindaric del Rio interfered with around the first turn On the upper turn Inu In endo endow got some lengths away from Greyhurst Greyhounds Czarowitz Carbonize and Moroni Moronic And now in fifth posi posit ¬ tion ion loomed up through the haze the all green of Pinar Pindaric del Rio Grayhurst Gravures stopped a quarter away from home and pulled up fin ¬ ished dished among the trailers The others came on bravely and Inuendo Innuendo supposedly winning was sent to the whip at the last sixteenth as her jockey saw the coal black Jones coming fast with Pinar Pindaric del Rio The lastnamed ashamed ran by the others as if they were tied to the fence and won very easily from Inuendo Innuendo second a length better than Moroni Moronic third he three lengths ahead of Czarowitz Carbonize CzarowitzThe The close of the program produced a race where everything was as mixed as the bigns bins of a Wentworth avenue butcher which read Sugar cured corned beef Glenmoyne Lennon opened at even money kbut but when the unaccustomed announcement was made in the batting ring Glenmoyne Lennon wears two bar plates a German bookmaker said Ah ha I smell a micos micros and went to 8 to 5 and his brethren finally car ¬ ried reid the price of Fosters old gelding up to 18 to 5 Meantime a strong play on Heigh High Ho cut hig Whig price in half and the Governor Sheehan money was put on in bunches Soon the Glen ¬ moyne monde money came and the 6 b 5 place and 11 to 20 show was rubbed first and at the post 2 to 1 straight was posted Ramiro II had always stood firm at 2 to 1 but now ad ¬ vanced vance to 2 to 1 There was more than the usual time allowed for betting and the signs around the judges staad stead threatened stormy weather but the horses finally came to the post and after some delay caused by the cavorting of Ramiro II a eood rood start was effected Heigh High Ho and Marzella Mazola opened a big gap at once so that at the halfmile half gound ground they raced paired several lengths better than Glenmoyne Lennon third he closely followed by Ramiro II Then came Governor Sheahan Sheehan many lengths away and Tranby Tabby and Winslowwere Twinflower notwithin untwisting speaking distance of the Governor Around the upper turn the positions wore the same and it did not look possible for Glenmoyno Lennon to ever got to the loaders in fact Ramiro II was lapped on to Fosters horse just before he swung into the home stretch and even money was offered that Laudemans Laundryman horse would beat Glenmoyne Lennon The horses behind were still badly strung out but Governor Sheehan showed to be done When Heigh High Ho struck tho thou straight J Reiff Riff took her to the inside fence and Marzeila Mazola soon died off Duko Duo and Wishards Wishers filly looked all over a winner at the final eighth she there being three lengths better than Glenmoyno Lennon who was swerving badly Ramiro II was roll ¬ ing King around like a dismantled hulk and Skeocs Kenos pulled him up A sixteenth farther along and Heigh High Ho stopped badly so that Bloss Loss gt Glen ¬ moyne monde together and although he was running very slowly the mud was like putty and must have been a foot in depth it was saen sean that he was first home by a wide margin But when Winslow was placed second and Tranby Tabby third the greatest astonishmeat astonishment prevailed as specta spectra CONTINUED ON SECOND PAQK PAK WINSLOW SURPRISES PEOPLE Continued from 1st Page tors torso in the grand stand along by the betting ring thought of course Heigh High Ho had lasted long enough to get the second money Everyone saw WinSlow and Tranby Tabby ploughing sloughing along through the quagmire and wondered which one had landed first at the wire as these horses ran home locked but no one dreamed that the pair had beaten Heigh High Ho A bet of 100 to 1 was offered without a taker that Heigh High Ho would be placed second and even after the numbers were hoisted bets were offered that a correction would bo made However Col Cool Clark is surely a man of good eyesight and when a horse is stopping badly he can virtually tand stand still which was probably the case with Heigh High Ho Taken all around it was one of the most remarkable of races and they do say that a horse never was seen to come from so far in the rear as did Winslow and land so close at the finish
