THORNTON STAKE HISTORY . The day after The Bachelor landed the Thornton Stake for Ed Corrigan, the San Francisco Chronicle gave tho following interesting history of the stake that has done so much to pro terve interest in long distance racing: The Thornton Stake, won yesterday by The Bachelor, is the fifth renewal. The first two were decided over tho old Bay District track and the last three over the Oakland track. Here is the record: "1895 Gilead first, Hawthorne second. First mile, 1 :54 ; second mile, 1 :S2 ; third mile, 1 :55 ; fourth mile, 1 :5L Time, 7:32. "1896-Star Ruby first, Gilead second. First mile, 1:56; second mile, 1:51; third mile, l:46r; fourth mile, 1 :50. Time, 7 :23h "1897 Schiller first, Lobangula second. Muddy track. Time, 8:04. "1898 Judge Denny first, Marplot second. First mile, 1:43; second mile, 1:53; third mile, 1 -.53 ; fourth mile, 1 :18t. Time, 7 :20l. "1899 Tho Bachelor first, David Tenny second. First mile, 1:51; second mile; l:47i; third mile, 1 :50 ; fourth mile, 1 :47i. Time. 7 :16. "A study of the time of the various miles should prove interesting. It will be noticed that in the race last year Judge Denny covered the first mile in 1:43, which was altogether too fast, while, if anything, The Bachelors first mile was a. second or two too slow. His last mile was probably the fastest mile ever made in a four mile race. Tao weights carried were as follows: Tho Bachelor, 113; Judge Denny, 115; Schiller, 109, and Star Ruby, 109. Thero have beoa three four-mile races over the Ingle-side track. In 189S Candid beat G. B. Morris, in 1897 Little Bob wai returned the winner, while last year Wheel of Fortune beat Buckwa. "For a cup, Lucretia Borgia, paced by stable companions, ran four miles against the record in 7 :11 on May 20. The time for each mile was : First mile, 1:50; second mile, l:45fc; third mile, 1:47; fourth mile, 1:48. Those are all the four-mile races in the nineties, with the exception of Marigolda essay against time at the Bay District track. Her time was 7:20h" The Chroniclo is in error about Marigolds race against time being the only other four-mile race in the nineties. It was run at the Bay District track January 14, 1893, and grew out of a previous four-mile race decided January 2, 1893, in which she beat Centella, Democrat, Elmwood, Mero and Cheerful in 7 :28i.
