GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Secretary Gratz Hanly, just returned from a "trip to Now Orleans in the interest of the Newport spring masting, makes the following statement touching the racing prospects of his track : "The prospects were never better than they are for racing at Newport this season. I have made arrangements for a special train of twelve cars to leave New Orleans for Newport the day after the close of the Crescent City meeting. The train will come north on passenger schedule time, and will arrive five days before our meeting begins. This will give them plenty of time to get rested up from the car fever. I now liave applications from the old-line guard of owners, which includes the following well-known horsemen: Bob Tucker, 12 head; Captain Buck Franklin, 12 hoad; Ed Fitzgerald, 10 head; Si Hughes, 9 head; Hardy Durham, 10 head; Henry McDaniel, 20 head ; W. M. Rogers, 25 head ; Texas Smith, 14 head; Dan OBrien, 7 head; Bill Steele, 12 head; Tony Licalzi, 12 head. Gone .Leigh and J. E. Seagram will send select strings to Newport. Leigh expects to have about 15 head at Newport from his big stable of 58 horses, now at Louisville. "Seagram will send in charge of Mr. Charles Boyle five head of crack racers. This is the rstr time Canadas representative horseman and sportsman has raced in this part of the country. There will be no lack of good jockey talent. While in New Orleans I had a talk with Mr. Fowler. He is in favor of an open ring, and if we can see our way clear we will not have a syndicate ring. The presiding judge has not yet been decided upon. The associate judges will be Messrs. Queen and Smith, Curly Brown will do the starting. "I expect Mr. Fowler back by March 15, when nal arrangements will be made for the meeting, which is to open April 8 and continue xintil May 19, inclusive, notwithstanding the report to the contrary." In writing up the Eastin and Larabie horses now at Louisville the correspondent of a Cincinnati newspaper says : "Ben Holladay, now a magnificent looking six-year-old, is, of course, tho star of tho Eastin fc Larabie string. Tho big bay son of Hanover and Mollie L. is the perfect picture of equine health, strength and good temper. As every one knows, he is one of the prominent entries in the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps. Mr. Wimmer says his royal charge is in fine fettle, though, of course, he is weeks and weeks away from a race, having had no training yet beyond daily walks and rubdowns. He daily eats his 11 quarts of oats and 20 pounds of hay, with an occasional allowance of mash, with all the appetite of a horse in perfect health, and he is as sweet-tempered as a horse can bo. Mr. Wimmer says that Holladay, who is now taking things easy, preparatory to the active training which will begin in April, ought to show rare form this year, as ho never seemed stronger or healthier in his career. Ho will havo a months hard work in Louisville, and will then be shipped, about the ltst of April, to Gravesend. " Ben Holladay will be a mighty hard horse to beat this year in the all-aged division, said Mr. Wimmer, as ho stood lovingly stroking tho brown muzzle which tho horso stretched out to him through the stable door. Hes good and strong, and unless some accident happens to him in his training, hell be fit as a fiddle when the eastern racing season begins. I am going to go slow with him and am not going to takq j any chance by pushing him too hard in his work. I dont think, though, that ho is apt to i meet with any mishaps in his work, as hes a horse that takes to training just like a duck takes to water. Hes a great weight.carrier and i a good stayer over a distanco of ground, besides having a nice turn of speed. All his races have shown that. And as for gameness, they dont tnrn em out any better than this big fellow here. " Concerning training conditions and prospects at the New York tracks, tho Sun of Monday says: "A visit to the training quarters at Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach and Grave-send yesterday found the trainers as optimistic as usual, but inclined to grow profane whon the thermometer or barometer was mentioned. One of them probably voiced the sentiments of tho rest when he said: " We are doing the go-as-you-please act around tho sheds, but it grows monotonous and we want to get out in the open. That tho horses feel aboat the same way is shown when we take thorn out for an occasional airing on tho boulevard. Then they try to get the bit in their teeth, and on their return are ready to eat everything in sight. Physically, we havo a sounder lot than in several years, but we are sadly, handicapped by the weather. Still there is no reason to fear, so far, that we will not have our early candidates pretty nearly ripe when tho bugle announces tho opening of the eastern schedule at Washington on April 3. At tho worst, we will be in line at Aqueduct, while we cannot fail to be ready for Morris Park. " Weights for tho Washington Handicap to be run at Bennings April 15 have been announcod. He is a good looking animal, and Mr, Wimmer expects much of him this year,
