GOSSIP OF THE TURF. A gossipping letter from Louisville says: "John Madden, who has always followed methods of his own and has always kept his own counsel, is this year following the plan which he has successfully followed for several seasons in his training work. There are always a lot of loafers around a racetrack, "rail-birds," who fancy that they are laying up a stock of wisdom from which to draw Hollars when the races begin. Now, these fellows, ones they get the name of a colt or filly that can do good work, soon make public property of fast trials, and thus ruin many a "good thing" by helping the bookies to gat a line on this good one or that. Madden has circumvented these wise boys very neatly, and not even the boys who exercise his horses and rub them down afterward know the names of half of them. Mr. Madden this year is following the plan he long ago adopted with success, and all that the rubbers, exercise boys and other stable help know about a horse is his number. Maddens orders come in the shape of "Here, boy, take No. 8 out and wash that mud off him," or "Dont give No. 10 but eight quarts of oats today, hes been over-eating himself," or, in the early morning, "Let No. 14 have a good stiff quarter and then bring him in and rub that left foreleg of his and bandage it up tight." By having his horses known by number instead of by name among the stable boys Mr. Madden not only keeps the public from knowing too much of his business, but has a system that works much smoother and better in the way of speedy and frictionless execution of orders given. Theres a handsome-looking brown colt in Maddens stable which goes by the name of No, 7, and this fellow i3 likely to do some pretty clever tricks in the two-year-old division before the season is over. He looks like a Hanover and he is built on fine, racy lines showing a combination both of speed and power. Names have been claimed and allowed for all of G. C.
