HAWTHOKNUS HOLIDAY RACING. Had yesterday been a fair aay Hawthorne would have scored its high record in the matter of attendance. Even under unfavorable weather conditions it is questionable whether the assemblage was not as large as has ever gathered at the track. It filled the grand stand to repletion and densely crowded the spacious brick covered space in front of the grand stand. It is safely within bounds to Eay that 6,500 people saw Prince Blazea capture the Dewey Handicap. Fourteen bookmakers did business in the big ring. While the horses were at the post for the first race one of them contrived to eo disable the starting machine that Starter Letcher bad to j return to old-time methods and do the starting with the flag. He did well except in the Dewey Handicap, for which Jolly Roger was left at the post. Finem Bespice got off so poorly that his dull rider pulled him up. Some cries of "bets off" went up, and a crowd gathered about the stand waiting for the impoEsible. Bets are not declared off on any track because horses are left at the post, much less at Hawthorne, where the judges have no knowledge of any betting that may take place. Princess Thyra made a show of her field in the first race, leading all through and winning with great eaEefrom the favorite, Strathbroeck. Tom Barretts rank outsider Hacian liked the deep mud and in a pretty finish managed to outlast Cheval dOr and won the second race by a head. The steeplechase was a comedy of errors. Except Colonel Weightman, every horse in the race took a tumble or went wrong in some fashion at some stage of the journey. Colonel Weightman fenced and ran well and finished away off by himself, the others staggering in at long intervals. The Dewey Handicap fell to the mudlark, Prince Blazes. Benneville set the pace to the far turn with Brigade and Prince Blazes in close attendance. Here he was beaten, and fell back, leaviDg Brigade and Prince Blazes to fight it out. Brigade ran a gallant race, but the weight told, and at the end Prince Blazes was a handy winner. Monk Wayman took the fifth race in easy fashion from l3abey and Kriss Kringle, while Marcato ran away from his competitors in the concluding event of tho day.
