GOSSIP OF THE TURF. A recent letter from London to the Morning Telegraph eaya: "In regard to the American thoroughbreds, it is hardly likely that any left-handed thrusts of the Weatherbys will prevent our turfmen from buying and racing your good stock. We see American-bred horses winning important races every week, and often several in a week. The stake record of the recent Newmarket meetings is wonderfully eloquent in this direction. No less than three stakes and two purses were won by American horses at the First October, while exactly the same record was made by your representatives at the Sacond October. The remarkable succession of victories at this weeks Houghton meeting is too fresh in your minds to need recapitulation now, and I am sure that the facts support my contention that Stnd Book eccentricities of the Weatherbys cannot militate against the lacing usefulness and our appreciation of the American horses." Charles F, McMeekin, acting for his former partner, Col. W. E. Applegate, today sold to J. B. Respaes, cf Covington, for ,700, a pair of very good looking yearlings.
