GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The Australian papers bring fall reports of the running for the Caulfield cup, the second mo9t important handicap race of the Bouth continent. The winner proved to bs Dewey, a three-year-old colt by Lochiel, named in honor of Admiral Dewey. There were twenty-one starters and Dewey was third from last passing the grend stand at the end of the first half mile. Bounding the turn for the run through the stretch Dewey had gradually moved up into fourth place. He paBBed the leaders and had enough left to Btall off Gauleon at the finish. Ballistite and La Carabine, both eons of Carbine, finished fourth and fifth. Gauleon is a full brother of The Grafter and Gaulns, triod performers of the Australian turf. The win of Dewey resulted in the colt being installed favorite for the Victorian Derby. A cablegram brought the intelligence, however, that Dewey finished third in the Melbourne Cup. The crack three-year-old of Australia, however, is Australian Star, by Australian Peer and a grandson of Darebin, who is owned at Rancho del Paso. He was no t eligible for the Victorian Derby. San Francisco Chronicle. The following paragraph from a London letter to an eastern newspaper deserves tho thoughtful consideration of every bookmaker in the land: "Lord W. Beresford deserves a vote of thanks. He has purchased the three-year-old colt, NeurasthenipponBkelesterizo from Mr. H. M. Dyas, and haB changed that horrible name to Waltzer, not a bad name for a son of Saraband. The former name was simply atrocious. You Americans have had Prestidigitatrice. Huitzilo-pochtli or whatever it was and two or three other pretty bad names. But did you ever dream of anything as ehocking as Neurasthenip-ponskelesterizo?" John E. Madden has purchased the McCann farm of 208 acres of blue grass land, adjoining Hamburg Place in the rear. With thiB purchase Hamburg Place now comprises 700 acres, valued at 1100 an acre.
