Newcom took the shortest route and rode with confidence all the way. Judging from the way the colt won he can be marked to beat better ones than he met today. Invictus. under a weak ride, swerved badly in the stretch and came near fouling Icon. The latter is a scrubby looking youngster and was a false favorite. Boaitary runs about the same kind of a race every time she starts. Light i Ball does not amount to much. Lillie Pantlaud showed but little speed. Monk Wayman revived suddenly and performed the -sharpest form somersault of the meeting. In his la6t start he was beaten off all the way. Yuba Dam. heavily backed, was well ridden and ran up to expectations. Schnell-laufer is a bad horse, especially when the price is short. Knight rode the colt for all he was worth and he had no excuses to offer for being beaten. Ben Chance plodded along at about the same gait all the way. Glonoine showed some speed, but it was not lasting. Scratched-17975 Bright Xight, 113. Monk Wayman, place, I to 1; show, evens. Yuba Dam, place, 4 to 5; show, out. Went to post at 3:33. At post 3 minutes. Start, good. Won cleverly: second driving hard. Third handily. Abe Furst is in superb form, was well ridden and from the eighth post home held his field safe. Ailanto showed a surprising turn of speed. He is a fast colt, however, and is deserving of attention in any company, especially with light weight up. Algareta about ran her race. She appeared to have a royal chance to win at the head of the stretch but hung a trifle at the end. Tenby was high in flesh and not near ready. He was jumped on in the stretch and pulled up a trine lame. Goebel showed none of his last years speed. Emma M. belongs in cheaper company. Alpaca was worn out in racing with Ailanto in the first three furlongs. Scratched -14811 Barrack, 90: 17900OConnell, 109. Overweights— Goebel. 3 pounds; Cherry Bounce 1L, 44. Abe Furst, place, out. Winner— Ch. h, by Silver Fox— Carita. , Went to post at 3:55. At post 4 minutes. Start good. Won well in hand ; second, third and fourth were sharply driven. Gold Fox is a horse of good class and beat his field like cracking ■ sticks. Knight rated the horse along with rare judgment during the early stages of the journey ; and never made a move on him until the stretch was reached, and then he took particular pains ! not to win too far off. Sidbow ran a cracking good race under the light impost. He was much i used chasing after Ed Gartland 11. in the first part of the race and tired in the run through the stretch. Miller rode a bad race on Strangest. He seemed to have no control over the horse, and I at the head of the stretch allowed him to swerve badly, almost colliding and interfering with i Gold Fox. Myth was right there at the finish. Red Pirate, as usual, ran to the mark. Three-quarters of a mile is as far as Ed Gartland 11. cares to go, and at that distance he should win soon i Scratched— U899jSam Fullen, 96; 17924 Man of Honor. 86. Winner B. g. by Siddartha Boetiti.i. Went to post at 1:25. Off at the first break to a good btart. Won handily. The next three t were under keen pressure. Satan was well ridden and the best. Hill waited on .Mandamus until 1 the stretch was reached and then went to the f ran! like a Hash. Mandamus showed plenty of | speed, but in the last sixteenth Mopped badly and barely lasted long enough t,, be second. Mel-locole. - despite it was his first start, was a hot tip and ran a fairly good race and finished with a i terrific ru-h at the end. Sorrel Rose also finished strongly on the outside. Lydia S. got into a s bad jam on the ftnrt turn and had more or less bad luck through the entire journey. It was a bad 1 Lit and a bad race from a time standpoint. Overweights— Lydia S.. 4 pounds. Went to post at 4 :55. At post i minutes. Start good. Won handily. It was a terrific drive for second place. Cheesestraw got away running, showed speed to spare and played with her field. She was much the best of this lot and is a fairly good filly. Frangible got into a jam at the start, was unlucky throughout, and everything considered ran a good race. Golden Rattle tired badly in the last few strides. Bergen sat up as straight and stiff as a telegraph pole on Innovator and was more of a hindrance than a help to the gelding. Miss Shanley showed some speed but retired early. Right Bower was beaten off all the way. Cheesestraw, place, 6 to 5 ; show, 3 to 5. Frangible, place, 2 to 1 ; show, evens.
