1 t . I » . c , i t , - - t i s a it t r , q s STARTER BROWN REINSTATED. "Curley" Brown, who was ruled off the turf at the Newport track last fall, was reinstated Thursday by the Appeals Committeo of the American Turf Congress. An official announcement to that effect was promulgated by Secrets ry Hopper. The Appeals Committeo con- | j sists of Colonel E. F. Clay, of Lexington : Judge George G. Perkins, of Covington, and Mr. George J. Long, of Louisville. There are no more reputable gentlemen— men of higher social and business standing in the communities in which they live — than the trio named, and it cannot even be imagined that they or any one of them has been unduly influenced by friends of the ex-starter in the action which they have taken in the matter. The fact that he was reinstated must be taken as evidence that the Appeals Committee considered that he had been sufficiently punished for the offence which got him into trouble. The committee did not act hastily in the matter. On the contrary, they considered the case very fully and carefully. They reviewed all the evidence 1 that was brought before the directors of the Queen City Jockey Club, on which the ex-starter was ruled off, and also that which 1 was offered when the matter was up before the 1 legal authorities of Campbell county, and after considering it all they concluded that Brown 1 had been sufficiently punished, the light sen- tence that had been imposed by the court hav-r ing no little weight in influencing them in this decision. Accordingly, they reinstated him. ■ I Their action removes all the disabilities against the ex-starter, and he is once more eligible not only to visit any track tinder Turf Congress or : Jockey Club regulations, but also to race ! horses in his own name over any of them. "Curley," by his excellent work when starter at Newport, and by honest methods in his racing, ] made many friends around Cincinnati, and his - restoration to good standing on the turf will be 3 received with much pleasure by them. He will j not race his horses in the west. In fact, he left c the city last night for Sheepshead Bay, and the 3 horses of his string, which are now at Louisville, will be sent on there in the next few days. ■ Wedderstrand, the stable jockey, who is now riding at Newport under the direction of J. J. t McCafferty, will remain here until Monday night 1 to fill engagements at Latonia on the opening I day of the meeting at the Kenton County track, when he will go east to n in his stable.— Cincin- " nati Enquirer.
