GOSSIP OF THE TUKF. Many believe Kinley Mack, the great eastern si ake winner, hails from Kentucky. This is a mistaken idea, as the following extract from a California letter shows: "Songstress, the dam of Kinley Mack, the only horse to win the Brooklyn aud Suburban handicaps— and it is worth remembering that the California-bred four-year-old won those two important events the same year, within three weeks of each other, and. what is more, the former over a heavy track and the latter over a fast track — was purchased as a yearling for L. U. Shippee of Stockton by John Mackey of Captain James Franklin of the Kentucky Stud of Tennessee, on the advise of Edward F. Smith, then secretary of the State Agricultural Society, who was attending to all of Mr. Shippees financial and horse business. He it was. too. who gave the filly the appropriate name of Songstress, as she was out of Malibran, who was a daughter of Melodiou-. The price i paid was .S700. At the Shippee dispersal sale, where Messrs. Burns and, Waterhouse purchased i Picnic, also named, by the way. by Mr. Smith, and [ so much of their present stock, there was quite a i battle for the possession of Songstress, which, though she had been a failure as a race hor-e she had been raced at the Bay District track, , was a i_rand-looking individual, a blood bay ; without a spot of white, and built exactly I on the lines of a typical English thoroughbred. - She was finally knocked down to Mr. . Mackey for ,000 or thereabouts, who thus I obtained her for himself, aud Mr. S. C. Lar-abie of Deer Lodge. Mont . but the latter r was so impressed that he bought her out " right from his partner. Bred first to St , Saviour in 1891. then twice to Fellowcharm, and once to the ill-starred Martenhurst, she e produced, in 1895, to Islington, the fast filly y I 1 i I . . Mary Black, whose appearance so pleased Mr. La rabie. one of the owners of Kinley Mack, that he ordered her bred back to Islington, with the result in the shape of the present winner of the Brooklyn Handicap and Suburban Handicap. Galopin. who died recently at the age of 27, had a somewhat remarkable history. He was bred by Mr. Simpson at Diss, and there was for a time some doubt as to whether he was by Delight, a good horse in his day, or by Vedette. The matter was, however, cleared up, and Galopin. duly described as the colt by Vedette — Flying Duchess, was sent as a yearling to be included in a sale at Middle Park. Here, at the earnest suggestion of the late Lord Falmouth and Mr. C. B. Pitman, who had accompanied him to the sale. Prince Batthyany went beyond the limit he had fixed and gave 520 guineas for the colt, who was sent to be trained, like the rest of the Princes horses, at Newmarket. As a two-year-old he won five races out of six. being only beaten two heads iu the Middle Park Plate. This was the only defeat he ever knew, and as a three-year-old he was not beaten at all, winning the Derby iu a canter, and four other race-;. His last was a match against Lowlander. which created great excitement at the time, and he would no doubt have done equally as well as a four-year-old had not his owner found the excitement of running him too great and sent him forthwith to the stud.
