IEO IfEWmLS RIVERSIDE STAKES The largest crowd of the week was present at Harlem yesterday and witnessed some splendid sport Surprises were the order of the day and the bookies cleaned up in great style styleThe The greatest shock to form occurred in the Riverside Stakes which was taken in a drive by Leo Newell which showed a dull race behind Banish August 13 Pat Dunnes entry consist ¬ ing of Toah and Silurian was favored by the talent but the best the popular turfman could do was to run second and third Toah was un ¬ doubtedly the best but was bumped far out of the race at the first turn losing some ground and in making it up at the latter end of the race had to exert himself so much that he had nothing left to finish with and was unable to stall off Leo Novells strong bid at the end To a splendid start Silurian darted into the lead closely followed by Leo Newell and Elmer L with Toah and Lady Strathmore bringing up the rear Moving down the backstretch the last named made up the ground quickly she bad lost by being bumped at the first turn and tbroatlatched Silurian the two passing tba half two lengths in front of Leo Newell with the others well bunched There was little change in these positions until well straight enedf for borne where Toah moved up fast and joined his stable companion Along in here Elmer L moved up with the leaders having saved mnch ground by bugging the inside rail at the stretch turn It appeared very much like Toah at the last sixteenth post cut Leo Nevtll ceme with a meb next to the inside rail atd the two hcolf d up for a reusing finish the latter wicnirg on the pret by the shortest of margins with Silurian four lengths away The last named tired badly in the last sixteenth as did also Elmer L Telamon was moving fast at the end and would have been third in a few more strides Ledy Stratbmore died away to the rear juet before tuining into the run in inJenbert Jenbert proved an easy winner in the young ster scramble at six furlcngs although the time etemps the race as a poor one from a time viewpoint Gallagher on the strength of his good second to Ed Austin in the Young ¬ ster Stakes wae made a decided favorite but the beet the S5COO beauty could do was to run second Ameeras accompanied by Prue set the pace for the first quarter with Janbert and Gallagher close up Just before turning for home Janbert moved up to the leaders Helen Print and Gallagher also joining the trio Straightening for the wire Prue fell away beaten and Helen Print gave up the struggle Janbert bad little trouble then in shaking off Ameer a B and aesnming an easy command win ¬ ning by almost four lengths Gallagher and Ameeras had a sprinted tilt for second place the former ontgaming the latter in the closing strides McCheensy ran a dullrace and can do mnek bettor bettorHatter Hatter Mariner had on his running clothes yesterday end easily took a fair field of sprint ¬ ers Into camp negotiating the six furlongs in 118 He was lucky to get off in front of a field of fifteen and after shaking Delia Ostrand off at the first quarter was never afterward in trouble winning easily by two lengths from Goal Ennner which beat Bosa Diah a bead for second place Bevanna was fourth lapped on tjfoal Bnnner off poorly7 was badly messed about before reaching the head of the stretch but when he got through to clear sailing he ran past horses and was cloeirg fast at the end Van Hrorcbeke was right there for five and a 1 half furlongs furlongsA A cheaplot of sailing platers went to the post postin in the first race the talent being all ataeaai to wkidtwas the b et The winner turned up in Hanan which won a lucky victory on the post from Fox Bard The latter bad he been able to gat through in time would certainly have won as he closed resolutely after trailing back of bis field to the head of the stretch Onoto was third two lengths away awayThe The third race a dash of one milo for three yearolds and upward was taken by Denman Thompson which made his run just before en ¬ tering the stretch and easily passed the leader Zacatoso in the final eighth winning by two and a half lengths with the latter a length and and a half in front of Hylo Hylo ran well for seven furlongs and then began to tire badly Emma C L had enough at the head of the stretch while Pirates Queen after being thrown clear out of the race by being cut off at the first turn was never afterward a contender The lastrrace of the day was won by Searcher which proved himself to be much the best He appeared to be beaten while going down the backstretch in next to last position but after the first half had been run he began to pick up his field and gradually forged to the front get ¬ ting clear in the last sixteenth He moved away fact frt m the latt sixteenth post and won in the easiest manner possible by three lengths Brutal v bich ran in much improved form came strongly in the last hundred yards and got second place by a half length from Kunja
