GOOD BAC1ICG AT HAWTHORNE HAWTHORNEThe The splendid weather and the improving track at Hawthorne yesterday drew out the largest crowd of the week Those that went out to the track were well repaid for their visit as a better card cf puree offerings could not have heen given anywhere The course waa jnet a trifle slow but should be in tip top shape this afteinoon if no rain falls in the meantime The days feature was the fourth race a free handicap pursa of 700 for threeyearolds and upward at ona mile Headwater was hit upon as the best in the race and such he proved to be being backed down from 12 to 5 to 8 to 5 at post time After lying up close to the leader all the way he came away with a rush in the final eighth and won very easily Boney Boy closely attended by Max Bendix and Anthracite started out to show the way but he grew tired after running a half and suddenly retired leaving Max Becdix in the lead with Anthracite Headwater and Jiminez lapped on him just be ¬ fore curving for home The quartet ran in a cluster until about a furlong cut where Max Bendix had enough and it waa an easy matter for Headwater to forge to the front In the last sixteenth he kept increasing his lead win ¬ ning at the end by two lengths while Jiminez beat Anthracite a length for eeccnd place The last named rallied in the last sixteenth and finished fast Jiminez ran as if a shade short and the race should do him much good Max Bendix quit badly in the last eighth Boney Boy was beaten off at the end endThat That fiood filly Fronta took the third race a dash of five furlongs for twoyearolds in one of the most exciting finishes of the day The filly was thought pretty well of by the talent being backed from 3 to 1 to 13 to 5 Evening Star as usual started out to cut out the pace leading by a fair margin up to the last six ¬ teenth where she began to tire and Pronta closed on her The former clung to her work wilhgameness but the latter proved too much for her winning by threequarters of a length gradually going away Golden Glitter finished third a length and a half back of Evening Star and ran in improved form Emathion under a weak ride quit palpably a furlong out although he might have finished closer up if not pinned against the inside rail in the last eighth Commissioner Forster was never a con ¬ tender He runs best in heavy going goingBam Bam Hildreth sprang a good one in the days opener when bis filly Lingo won a dash of five and a half fnrlocgs for twojearolde The filly was backed heavily in the books and won with out much trouble Mollio T showed the way by a snug margin up to the last eighth where she tiled and Lingo assumed command Tho latter came away easily in the last hundred yardg and scored by a length and a half from Baby Hall The latter took second place by three lengths from Blessed Damozel Baby Hall ctme fast in the closing strides but had no chance to beat the winner Coacoa showed early speed as did aho Irmingaid but both died away in the final quarter Both Boaie Mac and Jean Raphael ran away before the race spoiling whatever chance they had of winning winningFalse False Lead took the second race a dash of one and oneeighth miles by two and onahalf lengths from Harry Preston but it was a lucky victory aa had the latter not met with an early entanglement that threw him clean out of the first part of the contest he must certainly have won To add to hifl early mishap Farrell car ¬ ried him far out at the head of the stretch where he lost ground at a critical juncture of the race False Lead always close up to the leader saved ground by skinning the inside ail at the head of theBtretch Farrellflniehed three lengths back of Harry Preston Zacatoso ran well for seven furlongs and then quit Sir Eennath was well up for six furlongs furlongsWith With Searcher and Brief scratched in the fifth race it seemed to bo a good thing for Gawaine which has run consistently in his last few races Off in front he made every post a winning one and won quite easily at the end by a length from Flying Torpedo which came with a be ¬ lated rush in the last sixteenth He had no chance to beat the winner at that Basselas and G W W had a hot tilt for the third place down the last eighth the former getting the verdict by a bead on the post This was not G W Ws race as he is capable of a better showing Big Injun ran a cracking good race and finished strongly He is ready to win when placed right rightHenry Henry of Trastamare appeared to be the best in the last race a dash of one mile and such he proved to be After lying along in fourth posit ¬ ion to the final eighth Gormley called upon him and he responded with a bound coming away easily in the last hundred yards and win ¬ ning by a length The fight for second place was a spirited one Synia jnst lasting long enough to get her head over the line in front of Banish he beating Ecome a nose Synia ran a good race considering it was the first time she has started here this year Oxnard was coming fast at the end Brownie Anderson had enough after running well for seven furlongs furlongsS S C Hildreth owner of Lingo and Van Meter Bro owners of Blessed Damozel were each fined 10 for violating tho rules governing the paddock in tho first race raceBefore Before the racing began a number of horses in training were sold at auction the most im ¬ portant change being the
