LAND8EERS PROVISO STAKES. Despite tho cool weather that caused lovers of racing to resort to their winter wrappings there was a big crowd on hand at Harlem yesterday, those that braved the inclement conditions being amply repaid for their visit. The card was one of the best .that has been presented in weeks and was productive of excellent sport. The feature event of the day was the Proviso Stakes, a dash of five and one. half furlongs for two-year-olds with ,500 added. Harry New was the medium of a heavy plunge and was made a decided favorite, being held at 7 to 5 in the betting but the best he could do was to run a very poor third. The winner proved to be Louis Ezells good gelding Landseer which beat Lucien Appleby on the post by a nose after a merry tilt in the last eighth. Lucien Appleby ; got off with a flying start and held a fair ad- , vantage up to a sixteenth out where Landseer ; moved up faet and joined him, the two fighting ; it ont to the wire. Lucien Appleby tired per- ; ceptibly in tbe closing strides. Harry New fin- ; iBbed third seven lengths away. Sol Lichten- ; stein showed Bpeod but could not carry it far. ; Money Muss proved conclusively that he was ; not presented with his last victory at the start ; by beating a good field of sprinters in the third race like breaking sticks. He led from start to finish, holding his field safely at all times. In the last sixteenth W. J. Deboe came with a , great rush, but it was too late, as Money Muss i beat him handily by a nock. The former beat i Gonfalon three lengths for aocend place. Mas- i ter Marinor put up an indifferent race and whs i never a contender. J. V. Kirby showed well, i considering that he was conceding a lot or i weight to many horses in tho race. Flying Torpedo was in great fettle, taking the I second race, a dash of one and an eighth miles, i in handy fashion. -He led from start to finish, , winning by a length from Eesada, which beat f Boiling Boer a Tmad for second place. Beseda z ran probably the best race of her career. Oron- i tas put up an indifferent performance. Boiling , Boer was well spent at the finish and clearly ; showed ho doaa not like a route at high press-ure. The days opener went to Inventor, heavily backed by tho horsemon. He came with a well-timed rush at the end and won quite easily by a length from Duko of Connaught, which fin- 2 ished a half before Inspector Shea for second place. Tho last-named finished stoutly and 2 bears watching from now on. Mythrox showed 2 speed for five furlongs, but died away when the 2 stretch drive came. 2. Henry Burt, a rank outsider in the betting, 2, took the fifth race, a dash of a mile, by two 2, lengths from Goal Bunner with plenty to spare. He went easily into the lead after the first quarter had been run and was never headed thereafter. Goal Bunner put up a poor race and is probably not enamored of anything over 2 seven furlongs. Valdez rua a surp-pioly good 21 race and would have beaten out t Bunner 0 for second place in a stride or two Jiminez 21 showed plainly that he was short. He finiBhed fairly fast and the race should do him good. After Alee had run himself into weariness in the sixth race, after showing great speed for seven furlongs, Hermoncia passed him easily and won much as his rider pleased by a length from El Ghor, which boat Aloe four for second place. 21 Ghor came with a rash at the end, but had no chance to baat tho winner. Crosby proved to be tho best of a bad field in the last race, winning in a drive by a nock from Frank M., which baat MiBS Dool6y four for second place. Jockey Birkenruth was fined 0 for cutting across the field with Landseer In the fourth race. Dominick was fined 5 by Starter Dwyer for trying to beat the barrior with Money Muss in the third race.
