i : t i 1 . , : HERMENOIA DEFEATS OBONTA8. The cold weather of yesterday kept the attendance at Lakeside down to the regulars, but those that went out to the Indiana track were well repaid for their visit as the contests proved in most cases to be the most exciting of the week. A crisp, heavy wind blew all afternoon but despite this fact comparatively fast time was made. Four favorites out of six scored. The betting was brisk and fairly heavy. The principal race of the day was the fourth, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds and upward. Hermencia with Coburn in the saddle was made a 7 to 5 favorite and rewarded the confidence placed in him by his many backers by winning in easy fashion. He took tho lead at flag fall and simply played with his field, winning easily by two lengths from Orontas, which beat Wayward Boy one for second place. OrontaB closed up fast in the last eighth but the distance was too short for him. W. J. De-boes effort was far below his host form and he gradually fell away beaten after the first quarter had been run. Wayward Boy ran" a fairly good race but tired in the stretch drive. To the surprise of many Puryear, whose showings of late have been consistently poor, took the first race, a four and one-half furlongs scramble, by a head from Smiths Beel in a dingdong finish. Crescent City was third, one length away. He was outrun in the early part of the race but closed up fast in the last eighth. Fade Meny, the favorite, was never a serious contender, the weight appearing to anchor him. Andes proved to be a shade the best in the second race, a six and a half furlongs dash, beating Maggie Davis a neck on the post after a spirited finish down through the last eighth. The latter stood a long drive down the last quarter and showed gameness. Henry of Trast-amare was third, four lengths back. He made up much ground in the last half and is ready to win if placed right. The third race, a six furlongs scramble for two-year-olds went to Pyrrho, which contrary to former showings, dashed into the lead at the barriers rise and remained there to the, end. He won by two lengths oasily from Amote, which finished one and a half in front of John A. Clarke for second place. The last named was made a 6 to 5 favorite, but ran far below the good form he had shown several days before. Otis had him trailing back of his field up to the turn for home. He closed up fast thereafter, but too late to be of any avail. Free Pbeb barely got his head under the wire in front of Barilla in the fifth race, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles. The latter closed up stoutly in the last eighth and would have been returned the winner in another stride. Linden Ella finished third, two lengths away. Myth showed a lot of speed for seven furlongs, but died away fast when the pinch came. Fantasy was much the best in the finale, a split of the preceding race. She moved up fast when turning for. home and came away without much trouble, winning by five lengths from Donator, which beat Isabey a head for second place. Precursor showed a lot of speed and held a commanding lead to the stretch turn, but tired badly in the straight run for home. The entry of the horse Hanswurst will be refused in future at Lakeside. Judge Hamilton called Otis up in the stand after the third race and lectured him for his indifferent ride on John A. Clarke. The Bale of thoroughbreds advertised to take place yesterday in the LakeBide paddock has been postponed to Saturday,
