Big Gun fenced in improved form and showed the most speed on the flat, held the lead throughout, put up a game finish and was best. Ferocious moved up fast in the last half and but for stumbling over the last hurdle, would have made a closer thing of it. Neponset finished well. Semper Ira shot his bolt at a mile and a half, when he went up to the winner, retiring shortly afterward. Herculean fenced like a novice, but showed superior speed on the fiat, and but for being in a pocket in the last sixteenth would have been an easy third. Rightful, from a good start, held sway throughout, drawing decisively clear of the field in the last furlong and shows steady improvement. St. Jude was unequal to beating the winner, but held the others safe on both speed and stamina. Buttons finished strongly. Clarion failed to stay in the last quarter and is evidently only moderate. Van Ness broke fiatfooted but quickly raced into the lead and easily shaking off Sweet Clover, which had attended him closely to the stretch, came away in a canter and was much the best. Sweet Clover held on well throughout under a lucky and skillful ride. Lady Radnor drew clear of the others in the last quarter. She is a very bad actor at the post. Cigar, a good looker, got away badly, closed a big gap and should improve. Hurst Park showed the way from start to finish and, apparently under pressure throughout, put up a fast and game race and ran like a stayer. Africander came on at the end with a tremendous rush. Ada Nay, running on tho outside, made a wide turn, but was going very strongly at the end. Shorthose finished fast and came from a long wav back. Port Royal broke fiatfooted, but took a safe and wianing lead in the first furlong, which he never relinquished, and in spite of bearing out in the stretch turn, won going away very easily and was much the best. Cunard was favored by the going aad ran head and bead with Pretorious to the stretch, where he outstayed the latter, drawing away strongly"right at the end. Both had been driving almost throughout to keep the leader in sight. Pretorius was hardly keyed up for the journey and will improve. Grand Opera and Francesco were both trailing many lengths in the rear and made up much ground in the last quarter, especially Grand Opera, which closed an immense gap. Fatalist practically cantered throughout, waiting on the pacemakers to the stretch, where she brushed past them as if they were anchored. Cougar was favored by the grass course and finished strongly, but was very lucky to beat Adelaide Prince. The latter was caught napping after making the pace under a choking pull. She was not keyed up for so long a journey and should improve. San Andres ran out on every turn, lost a dozen lengths and was probably second best. Bessie McCarthy evidently disliked the soggy grass course and lacked in speed and stamina. Alsike retired early. C- Scratched 33210 Surmise, 106; 332852Philippine, 104. j-j Fatalist, show, out.
